Also ordered straight to series is docudrama The West, Executive Produced by Emmy® Award winning Stephen David Entertainment (The World Was, The Men Who Built America) in association with Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn from Redford’s  Sundance Productions (who will oversee the project).   Eight one-hour episodes have been ordered which will premiere in the Summer of 2016, with production to start in August.

The West will transpoert viewers into the violent world of coboys, Indians, outlaws and law men, chronicling the intimate and little-known stories of Western legends such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatgt Earp, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Spanning the years 1865 to 1890, the limited event series will show how, in the aftermath of the Civil War, the opportunity of land transforms the United States into the “land of opportunity” and creates modern America. “The West” will also feature exclusive interviews with notable names from classic Western films, including James Caan, Tom Selleck, Kiefer Sutherland, Ed Harris and more.

The final seven episodes of the Western drama Hell on Wheels will also air in Summer of 2016.

The Making of the Mob, also Executive Produced by Stephen David Entertainment, has been renewed for eight more episodes for a second season.

The Making of The Mob: Chicago will premiere in 2016 and document the emergence of organized crime in Middle America through the rise and fall of iconic gangster Al Capone. From Capone’s early days in New York running the streets with Lucky Luciano and Bugsy Siegel, to his prolonged war with the Irish gangs of Chicago and his final battles with Eliot Ness and law enforcement, The Making of the Mob: Chicago will tell the true and full story of the Chicago underworld.

The season two renewal follows the success of AMC’s first installment of the series, The Making of The Mob: New York, which has delivered an average of 1.5 million viewers and 626,000 adults 25-54 through six episodes in live+3 ratings. The finale will air Monday, August 3rd at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead:

The Walking Dead‘s previous Executive Producer, David Alpert and Executive Producer & Showrunner Dave Erickson joined Executive Producer  & Director Adam Davidson and cast members Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Frank Dillane, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lorenzo James Henrie and Mercedes Mason made up the panel at the TCA update today.

Fear the Walking Dead was greenlit back in March for two seasons. The series will debut in the U.S. Sunday, August 23rd at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT with an extended 90-minute episode.  The premiere will also air on AMC Global channels around the world simultaneously and will then re-air in local time zones during primetime.*  A special episode of Talking Dead, hosted by Chris Hardwick (Nerdist), will follow the season one finale on Sunday, October 4th at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (U.S. only).

Fear the Walking Dead is executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert and showrunner David Erickson and produced by AMC Studios. The series stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Liza, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia and Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris.

The session started with some clips from Season 1, Episode 3 of Fear The Walking Dead being shown, depicting Los Angeles starting to fall apart with riots, power failures and spread of an unnamed plague.

Fear the Walking Dead explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) have managed to assemble.  The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down.  A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.  “By the end of Season 1 we know the world has changed and it is the end of the world as we know but it not yet at the point where Rick woke up in Georgia,” said showrunner Erickson of the pace of the new series. “We come to realize the world has changed but our characters are still insulated from all of what has happened,”he added. “Part of what they will see in Season 2 will be that.” He continued to say that the next cycle of episodes will explore how things are fractured for this family as the show progresses, also noting that season 3 has yet to be ordered.

Into the Badlands:

AMC’s new martial arts drama series Into the Badlands will premiere Sunday, November 15th at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.  In a land controlled by feudal barons, Into the Badlands tells the story of a ruthless, well-trained warrior named Sunny (Daniel Wu) and a young boy named M.K. (Aramis Knight) who embark on a spiritual journey across a dangerous land. From AMC Studios, the six-part series is created by executive producers/showrunners/writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Shanghai Noon, “Smallville”), and executive produced by Oscar®-nominated producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction, Contagion), director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, Shanghai Nights), fight director Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero, House of Fury) and Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero).

Into The Badlands is an exciting moment for us in that martial arts is not only a new genre for an AMC series, but also one that has been largely absent from television for 15 years,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming for AMC and SundanceTV.  “The team behind Into The Badlands, led by showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, is comprised of some of the best martial artists and martial arts filmmakers in the world, and they have crafted a show that over-delivers against two big goals we set for the show: to create a compelling character drama, and to introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series.”

The series premiere will coincide with AMC’s newest movie event, “AMC FightFest,” a two-week martial arts movie marathon beginning Monday, November 2through Friday, November 13. The on-air special event will feature some of the most iconic martial arts films in the history of the genre each weeknight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

“In the same way AMC has historically engaged fanbases from horror through Westerns, ‘AMC FightFest’ is an opportunity for us to connect with and serve martial arts fans,” said Tom Halleen, executive vice president of programming and scheduling for AMC and SundanceTV.  “We are building an exciting lineup of films that target their passion for the genre as we prepare them for the amazing debut of Into the Badlands.”

Into the Badlands is set centuries from now, where a feudal society has emerged and the strongest and most brutal rose to wealth and power. This area came to be called the Badlands, and is divided among seven rival Barons who control the resources necessary to daily life and enforce their rule with the aid of loyal armies known as Clippers. Clippers enjoy status and comforts the general population can only dream of, and they are willing to sacrifice their lives in service to their Barons.  Few Clippers ever live to see their 30th birthday, but Sunny (Daniel Wu) is no ordinary Clipper. Demonstrating lethal proficiency in martial arts, Sunny rose swiftly through the ranks to become Quinn’s (Marton Csokas) Head Clipper and most trusted advisor.

For decades, Quinn has been unchallenged as the Badlands’ most powerful Baron, but the territory’s newest Baron, The Widow (Emily Beecham), has begun staging brazen attacks on Quinn’s transport vehicles and is testing his appetite for a fight.  One of those attacks leads Sunny to M.K. (Aramis Knight), a teenage boy who has survived a deadly ambush.  Sunny soon comes to understand that the teen harbors a dark secret and has a hefty bounty on his head.  As The Widow continues her campaign against Quinn, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined.  In their evolution as teacher and student, each will discover his true purpose; together, they will embark on an odyssey that could mean the difference between chaos and enlightenment for everyone in the Badlands.

Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero) as Sunny; Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as Quinn; Aramis Knight (The Dark Knight Rises) as M.K.;  Oliver Stark (“Luther”) as Ryder; Emily Beecham (28 Weeks Later) as Widow; Orla Brady (“Dr. Who,” “Fringe”) as Lydia; Sarah Bolger (“Once Upon a Time,” “The Tudors”) as Jade; Ally Ioannides (“Parenthood”) as Tilda; and Madeleine Mantock (Edge of Tomorrow) as Veil.

BBC America:

Doctor Who was hot on everyone’s minds.   Executive Producer Steven Moffat was not ready to reveal what role Maisie Williams will have this new season but did tease “she isn’t playing a returning character or someone in the Doctor’s past. Her role will develop in an unexpected way.”

Doctor Who returns to BBC America on September 19 and audiences who attended San Diego International Comic-Con earlier this month were able to see Williams appear i the latter part of the trailer.

Fathom Events has been able to experience  this year on September 15-16 the two-part Season 8 finale ‘Doctor Who:  Dark Water/Death in Heaven‘ in RealD 3D and Dolby Atmos, along with a special prequel scene for the first episode of Season 9, The Doctor’s Meditation and an exclusive interview with Doctor Who stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman that is hosted by Wil Wheaton.  This leads to the question of whether or not a Doctor Who will be made into a movie or not.

Moffat addressed his concerns,“First that would be up to the BBC. What are we going to do? Shut down for a year and make a movie? Does everyone want that — a whole movie and not a series? If there’s a movie, you can’t have a different doctor in the movie — that would be incredibly damning to the franchise.”

BBC America today also announced two new co-productions – the first co-developed series under the wide-ranging, creative partnership between BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks that was announced late last year.* Undercover, a gripping political thriller from acclaimed writer Peter Moffat (Silk, Criminal Justice) starring Sophie Okonedo (Criminal Justice) and Adrian Lester (Hustle), and Thirteen, a compelling contemporary mystery from rising star Marnie Dickens, will both air on BBC America in 2016.

Sarah Barnett, President and General Manager, BBC America, also announced the first tranche of an extensive original scripted development slate including:

  • Dirk Gently,an adaptation of Douglas Adams’ (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) wildly successful comic novel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, is an anthology series set in the unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, ridiculous Dirk Gently.  With an utterly fresh, comically self-aware tone, this series is equally sincere in its danger, humor, violence and drama.  Penned by Max Landis – the mind behind cult classic Chronicle – this series is produced by IDW, Circle of Confusion and Ideate for BBC America.
  • An untitled project from prolific filmmaker Sebastian Silva. Using unconventional storytelling – including real people – Silva explores humorous, absurd and uncomfortably raw stories of 21st century dating in our impulsive era of swiping and liking. Sebastian Silva is the writer/director of 2015 Sundance and Berlinale selection Nasty Baby starring Kristen Wiig and Golden Globe®-nominated The Maid. A24 is attached to produce.
  • Moths, follows a young American woman whose reckless quest for thrill and adventure takes her to the epicenter of Tokyo’s Shibuya sub-culture scene. After an unthinkable crime occurs, she finds herself face-to-face with an unfamiliar, ancient and intractable world. Tony Wood and Cineflix are attached to produce.
  • The Greater Good from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dana Shapiro (Murderball) is the provocative, fictionalized story of Cora Jones, lone survivor of the Jonestown massacre where 918 of her fellow cult members died. She was saved, she believes, to rid the world of false prophets but, as her own fame as an atheist preacher grows, she begins to morph into the very thing she’s been railing against. This compelling drama about faith, family, hubris, paranoia and healing is also a cautionary tale about the rise and fall of an American leader. It is produced by Lakeshore Entertainment (Underworld).
  • An untitled comic-noir thriller from Anders August set in a 1950s resort follows the social climbing of a disarming young woman who turns out to be a dangerous sociopath. Anders August wrote the Oscar-nominated film The Pig and was executive producer of Follow the Money which premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival. Michael London (The IllusionistSideways) is attached to produce.
  • An untitled project from Anna Winger.   A family drama, an amped up adventure, and a celebration of the city of Berlin today, this journey is a darkly humorous exploration of colliding worlds, the unifying bonds of loss, and the dangerous pursuit of answers in a utopian city. Anna Winger is the creator of international series, Deutschland ’83.

Barnett, commented: “The scripted TV explosion in recent years has affirmed over and over that strong visionaries are the heart of creative and commercial success. At BBC America we’re doubling down on extraordinary creator-led projects.”

The two new co-productions, Undercover and Thirteen, will join BBC America’s slate of original scripted shows that includes the iconic series Doctor Who (returns September 19); Orphan Black (returns for a fourth season in 2016); The Last Kingdom (premieres October 10) and Luther (fourth installment premieres winter 2015).

“The BBC is a creative powerhouse and we’re delighted to partner with them on these provocative,   contemporary stories,” said Barnett. “Peter Moffat is one of the UK’s most vibrant and acclaimed screenwriters, while new talent Marnie Dickens brings a singular voice and perspective to her first original series. We can’t wait to launch these shows on the network.”

Undercover, a six part limited series, features lead character Maya (Okonedo) who is about to become the first black woman to hold the highest ranking public prosecutor role in England.

Just as her life comes under intense public scrutiny she discovers her husband Nick (Lester), and the father of her children, has been lying to her for years. Is he concealing an affair, or is it something altogether more sinister? If she digs up his real past will she jeopardize her own future? What price do you pay for uncovering lies? And who wants her in the top job, and why?

Peter Moffat says: “I’m relishing the prospect of returning to the contemporary British political landscape to look at where we stand and how we got here. Undercover is a thriller about identity, trust and the struggle to lead a morally principled personal and professional life, while working up close with the police, press, politicians and criminals who have so corrupted and damaged public life over the last 20 years.”

Undercover is executive produced by Hilary Salmon, Head of BBC Drama Production England, for BBC ONE and BBC America. She previously worked with Moffat on his hit legal series Silk and Bafta-winning Criminal Justice.

Thirteen is a new original five part mystery thriller which follows Ivy Moxham (Jodie Comer) on the day she escapes from the cellar that has been her prison for the last 13 years. It’s the day she’ll return to her home, to her family, to her life. It’s the day that is only the beginning.

Thirteen is an emotional rollercoaster that explores how to pick up the threads of a life half-lived and how to survive as a family under the greatest pressure: how to feel again, chance love again. It is a psychological drama about who to trust when you can’t even trust yourself.

Asked about her first original series commission, Marnie Dickens says: “I’ve always been fascinated by the resilience of the human spirit in even the most extreme situations and am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this story to life on the BBC and BBC America.”

Thirteen is produced by BBC In-House Drama Production England and Executive Produced by Elizabeth Kilgarrif for BBC Three and BBC America.

*In October 2014 AMC Networks acquired a 49.9% stake, and operating control of BBC America as part of a wide-ranging creative partnership with BBC Worldwide. The long-term joint venture brings together two global brands that are behind some of the most-watched, most celebrated programming on television and includes the co-development of premium, quality programming.

Please give me hope for Sheldon and Amy on The Big Bang Theory! — Arlene
I can’t give you hope just yet because Amy truly is determined to stick to her guns. “Right now, she really wants to take a step back and think about where she is, where they are and how she wants to move forward in her life,” EP Steve Molaro says. “I don’t think she’s necessarily in a rush to find another man, but I don’t think she’s ruling it out either.”

Do you know where the new season of Elementary is picking up? — Sam
We’re going to get a near direct pick-up as the fourth season kicks off one day after the news that Sherlock’s father is en route to New York. I can also reveal that Tim Guinee will be reprising his role as NSA Agent Dean McNally in the season premiere.

Do you have any idea when Mindy’s baby will be born on The Mindy Project? — Laila
Word on the street is that it will happen early in the season. I also hear that, location-wise, it’s a rather unconventional birth.

Note: This article is in response to the stabbings that took place at the Jerusalem annual gay pride parade on July 30, 2015.

It shouldn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen anywhere. But especially not now, not here, not in Jerusalem.

It shouldn’t happen in the only country in the Middle East that hosts a public gay rights parade of this acceptance and magnitude. It shouldn’t happen in a country where the Prime Minister himself supports the rights of gay people to march and to live and to be free.

Not here. Not now.

Am I angry at Hasidism? No. This man is one man. Am I angry at religion? Not really.

I’m angry at history. For not progressing as quickly as our genetics have, and not as quickly as our love of human civil rights has, and certainly not as quickly as the human heart has.

This man is sick; he is mentally ill. Sane people don’t do this. This man has used the word of God in vain; to destroy and to hurt. He wanted to kill. For God. For the sake of God. For God’s sake. For God’s sake.

I have discussed with close friends the notion of religious mental insanity. I have studied Yehuda Klein Ha-Levi‘s writings and his evolution from violent activist to reasonable political force.

One man can change from a hater and a violent adversary—from a killer, even—into something else. I believe that to be true. I can’t believe anything else.

I am not excusing this act. But as a bleeding heart liberal, I see this as a case of mental instability, not just religious zeal. I can’t let this one act by this man justify eliminating religion. It’s not that simple.

Every major religious and political authority in Israel has denounced it, as they should.

A TOP 5 CABLE DRAMA LAUNCH AMONG ADULTS 25-54 THIS SEASON, “HUMANS” HAS AVERAGED 2 MILLION VIEWERS AND 1 MILLION ADULTS 25-54 THROUGH FOUR EPISODES IN THE U.S.

THE PREMIERE EPISODE WAS CHANNEL 4’S HIGHEST RATED ORIGINATED DRAMA IN 20 YEARS

NEW YORK / LONDONJuly 31, 2015 – AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos today announced that the critically acclaimed drama series “HUMANS” has been renewed for a second season. The series will return for eight new episodes, with production starting next year.

Penned by British writing partners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks,” Spooks: The Greater Good) and based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama “Real Humans” from Matador Films, the series stands as a top five cable drama launch among adults 25-54 in the U.S. this season and has averaged 2.0 million viewers and 1.0 million adults 25-54 through its first four episodes in live+3 ratings. The first episode was Channel 4’s highest rated originated drama in 20 years; season one has attracted an 18.0% share of the UK viewing audience on Sundays between 9:00-10:00pm.

Co-produced by AMC and Channel 4 with Kudos, the makers of “Utopia” and “Broadchurch,” the first season tapped into society’s preoccupation with and mistrust of advancing technology and artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human? Can the very traits through which we define humanity (love, trust, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice) be taught? What really is family?  Exploring humans’ inherent fear of the unknown and the possible implications of granting machines consciousness, the final episodes will leave viewers on a thrilling cliff-hanger.

“We’re so pleased to announce a second season of ‘Humans’ and extend our terrific partnership with Channel 4, Kudos and the stellar cast, crew and writers Sam and Jonathan,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and Sundance TV. “As one of the year’s top new cable series, ‘Humans’ has been embraced by fans and critics across the U.S. and UK. We’re looking forward to continuing this very captivating story and further exploring the show’s parallel, Synth-filled world that hits so disturbingly close to home.”

Piers Wenger, Head of Drama at Channel 4, said: “‘Humans’ has proved a huge hit with both audiences and critics alike this summer, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and to the team at Kudos for bringing a truly unmissable show to life. It also marks a key moment for Channel 4 as we expand our remit for bold and original drama into the international, co-production space. We look forward to working with our partners AMC on season two of ‘Humans’ and to more Synth-related adventures to come.”

Derek Wax, executive producer, Kudos, added: “As producers, we’re so thrilled to have been able to work with Sam and Jon on such provocative and challenging ideas and stories.  We’re delighted that viewers have connected with the series so wholeheartedly and look forward to continuing the wonderfully collaborative relationship with Channel 4 and AMC. And of course, going back to Synth School to learn some new moves for series two.”

“Humans” is written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and produced by Kudos in association with Matador Films. Executive producers are Derek Wax (“The Hour,” “Occupation,” “Lip Service”) and Chris Fry (“The Smoke,” “Spooks”) for Kudos, Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström for Matador Films. Season two was commissioned for Channel 4 by Simon Maxwell and Beth Willis, and Joel Stillerman and Kristin Jones for AMC.

HBO_Lombardo

HBO_Lombardo

HBO programming chief, Michael Lombardo responded to an onslaught of questions today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press tour.  HBO just received 126 Emmy® Award nominations, holding the record for the most nominations thus far.   But that didn’t stop the press from hitting Lombardo hard with questions about violence in Game of Thrones, the quality of the second season of True Detective and more.

Lombardo predicts that Game of Thrones will end after eight seasons, or at least that is the current plan under discussion.   He admitted he had heard and read all of the complaints about the violence in the top-rated drama, but that he supports his showrunners (David Benioff and Dan Weiss).

“This show has had violence as part of one of its many threads from the first episode,” Lombardo said. “I can’t speak to any single person’s particular taste … I think the show is phenomenal. It hit 20 million viewers this year … And I’ll be honest you with you, I think there are no two showrunners who are more careful about not overstepping what they think the line is — and everyone has their own line, I understand — but doing things that are critical for the storytelling and I support them fully artistically.

He was also asked about the fate of the popular character in the series, Jon Snow.   Lombardo grinned and replied, “In everything I’ve seen, heard or read, Jon Snow is indeed dead.”

Lombardo has read all of the comments that have not been favorable toward Pizzolatto’s True Detective series.  Lombardo himself is quite pleased with what he has seen and he feels that his 12 million viewers tuning in each week must be satisfied as well. “Nic Pizzolatto is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today,” Lombardo says of the series’ creator/showrunner.  He then teased about the finale,   “I think he takes a big swing. I think the show ends with as satisfying an end as any show I’ve seen.”

Lombardo was asked about whether or not there would be a season 3 for True Detective and Lombardo said that the decision was up to Pizzzolatto.

Curb Your Enthusiasm‘ has been another HBO fan-favorite.  Lombardo then told of a story during his visit to Broadway to see Larry David in  Fish in the Dark.   David pointed to a notebook and told Lombardo that it was the next season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.   Lombardo did not look at the notebook, nor has he spoken to David since the encounter, but he is hopeful they will be able to sit down and bring back more of Curb.  “I don’t think it’s out of [Larry’s] system,” he said, before adding: “I think he wants to have something to say.”

David Chase will be bringing on a long-in-the-works project which will center on the formation of the Hollywood film industry.   Lombardo and his team recently saw a two-hour sneak peek of the “phenomenal” material.  Chase is continuing to write for the project.  When asked about the delay of the project, Lombardo explained, “I think it’s really challenging to come back to television after having a show like The Sopranos, a show that really hits on all levels like that.”

David Fincher’s Gillian Flynn Utopia is giving HBO a bit of a struggle when it comes to figuring out how to move forward with the project. HBO is at the same time trying to salvage House of Cards creator’s 1980’s music-video comedy Video Synchronicity.   Production of Video Synchronicity was stopped June 11, the cast being sent home at that time, a Hollywood Reporter source revealing that the show was still moving forward, but with undergoing some script changes and to give the writers time to catch up on scripts.

Lombardo confirmed that Video Synchronicity “isn’t dead” despite the two-month time period of being out of production.  “When we both saw the third and fourth [episodes], we realized we needed to go back and do some work on the scripts,” Lombardo said. “David’s attention at that point — he is someone who likes to be hands on, on everything — got diverted by another project [HBO’s Utopia]. [He’s] not good at letting us go ahead and do what we needed to do on Video Synchronicity while he was working on Utopia. I texted with him today, we’re going to turn our attention soon back to Video Synchronicity and figure out the path forward. But I fully expect we’re going to be able to finish that up.”

Video Synchronicity was picked up to series on May 4 and has completed four episodes in which the first two were directed by Fincher.   Lombardo still has high hopes for the series and said,”There’s too much good stuff for us not to figure it out. We’re going to figure it out.”

Lombardo admitted that HBO is “struggling right now trying to figure that out” when discussing Utopia.   He continued with “We’re at the moment, trying to figure out if there is a path forward or not for Utopia.”   Rumor has it that the project is already way over budget.

Lombardo was asked about how streaming services, such as Netflix have impacted his decision-making.   He said that first his team does not program defensively and second that the competition is not just streaming networks, but other cable and broadcast networks.   He acknowledged that there is a paradigm shift underway and bringing quality will continue to be paramount from HBO, and that networks are rethinking the length and format of everything that gets aired.

Hulu has just released a first look trailer of their new series ‘Difficult People‘ starring Billy Eichner (Billy Epstein)  and Julie Klausner (Julie Kessler).  Difficult People is Executive Produced by Amy Poehler.  Other cast include Andrea Martin, who plays Marilyn, Julie’s mother; James Urbaniak who plays Arthur; Gabourey Sidbe who plays Denise; Derrick Baskin who plays Denise’s husband Nate; and Cole Escola who plays Matthew, a co-worker of Billy’s.

The tagline for Difficult People is:  Life is really tough for Julie and Billy, two 30-something aspiring comics living and working in New York City.  While their friends and acquaintences move on to find success and love, they continue to struggle with careers and relationships getting more and more bitter each day.

The guest star list for Difficult People will be Martin Short, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers, Debbie Harry and Amy Sedaris.

Update 6:01 PM PT:   The Bronze, as mentioned below, had been under a deal with Relativity Media, in which Sony terminated that deal just days before the Chapter 11 filing.  Sony had retained the international distribution rights for the film when Relativity purchased the film at the Sundance Film Festival this past January for $3Mil to for domestic distribution rights.   However, after the termination letter was sent, the distribution of The Bronze has remained a mystery.   Sony has been holding some meetings to reassess it’s options relative to distribution of the film, including what options are available for other distributors for the US market.   While it is very likely it will see a distribution deal made, given the high interest in the film at Sundance, it is very unlikely it will be released in the previously planned October 16 date.  There will need to be time for a new P&A once a distribution deal is inked.

See also Melissa Rauch’s ‘The Bronze’ Future Release Uncertain with Relativity Media Near Bankruptcy

The Bronze was not the only film that reverted back to it’s backer.   Jane Got your Gun starring Natalie Portman did as well, and the film Out of This World was bought by STX Entertainment just before the bankruptcy filing.

The Bronze and Jane Got Your Gun  aren’t the  only films in limbo at the moment.   Some films were in pre-production, such as the thriller-action Hunter Killer,  starring Billy-Bob Thornton and Common, as well as the low-budget horror film Before I Wake which both may draw some interest, both slated for September releases.  Screenplay writer, Mark Klein has spent the last four months researching internationally, as well as domestically, a poignant World War II love-story at the time of the Holocaust, exhausting his paycheck, to develop The Lost Wife for Relativity, which now is also in limbo.   Stay tuned…we will try to update as we learn more.

Update 12:51 PM PT:   We just learned that Kavanaugh and the Board of Directors for Relativity Media have agreed that Kavanaugh should be supervised by the bankruptcy court and that the company he founded will have the bulk of it put up for sale, namely the Film and TV units.   Relativity Sports, Relativity EuropaCorp Distribution and Relativity Education will remain part of the company and not be sold off.

RM Bidder will take control of the bulk of the assets, which will then be auctioned, supervised by Blackstone Group and FTI Consulting, a financial services firm that has been overseeing for weeks now Relativity’s troubled finances.

Kavanaugh reacted with this statement, “Relativity continues to pursue its mission as a next-generation global media company, and we remain firmly committed to our film and television businesses. The actions we are announcing today will protect our valuable franchise and allow us to emerge as a stronger, more focused company.”

The company considered a number of options but finally came to the conclusion that the only way they could achieve their financial and strategic objectives was to go through a court-supervised reorganization.

Original Story:

Relativity Media filed for Chapter 11 with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York on Thursday, disgruntling many investors and creditors.

Ryan Kavanaugh, Relativity’s 11-year founder and CEO, had claimed clever financing and data analysis could unlock the secret to Box Office success previously.   Now with his filing, Kavanaugh hopes to find new partners or lenders to help cover the more than $300 Mil debt the company has, and to preserve his role as CEO.

Relativity Media still plans to release the comedy Masterminds, the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap and to continue production on its remake of The Crow which is to begin shooting in the Fall.

Likely to be sold to other investors are the horror film, Before I Wake, and the thriller The Disappointments Room.   Sony had already sent a letter of termination with it’s deal with Relativity Media over it’s purchase last January during Sundance Film Festival of the raunchy dark comedy, The Bronze, starring Melissa Rauch.  It is still unclear the fate of the film’s distribution at this time, but stay tuned, we hope to update you when we learn more.

The Chapter 11 filing is not the only filing Relativity has planned.  It also plans to file for a Debtor-in-possession financing (D.I.P.loan),  in order to continue operations while under the Chapter 11 protection.   Likewise it is actively pursuing negotiations with other sources of funding in order to continue with distribution plans for Masterminds and Kidnap.

Friday will be the day for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York hearing for Relativity Media.

Kunal Nayyar will be vying for Mindy’s affections on ‘The Mindy Project’ Image: WireImage

The Big Bang Theory‘s Kunal Nayyar will be joining The Mindy Project as well to play the potential husband for Mindy.

Now that The Mindy Project has moved over to Hulu for it’s fourth season, Mindy’s character is getting quite a work-out.   She has added Garret Dilliahunt, a doctor who disapproves of Mindy’s lifestyle (similar to Danny), has introduced her parents who are played by Sakina Jaffrey and Ajay Mehta (who don’t like Danny), and now will be having another man court her attentions in the form of Kunal Nayyar who will play Sendhil, hoping to win her affections.

Sendhil is a hedge fund manager, who of course will have approval by Mindy’s parents as an appropriate suitor for their daughter.  He is charming and Danny will feel threatened by the proposed arranged marriage her parents set for Mindy, regardless of the fact that she is pregnant with his child.

There will be likely more suitors and potential engagements that lie ahead for Mindy, according to producers who have no idea how many episodes lie ahead.

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, James May Image:

Good news for Jeremy Clarkson fans and Top Gear team fans!   Amazon has just inked a three-season deal with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to star in a new car show, bringing along with them their long-time Executive Producer Andy Wilman.  The show is still unammed but is due to go into production for airing in 2016.

It was anticipated that the trio would be solicited by another network or streaming service following the much-publicized firing by BBC of Clarkson after reportedly punching a producer.  Hammond and May also announced they would not return to the show without Clarkson.   BBC since has announced that they would revamp Top Gear with British TV and Radio personality, and exotic car collector, Chris Evans as the lead.

Clarkson had been with BBC for 27 years, but had been known to have a quarrelsome relationship with his former producer and generated a lot of headlines over his outspoken nature, often accused of racially offensive remarks and often upsetting local nationals in countries he has visited.

Clarkson left a few clues this morning via his Twitter about the deal:

And Amazon was quick to Tweet out the news:

In a statement from Jay Marine, Vice President of Amazon Prime Video EU, he said “Customers told us they wanted to see the  team back on screen, and we are excited to make that happen.  We can’t wait to see what Jeremy,  Richard, James and the team will create in what is sure to be one of the most globally anticipated shows of 2016.”

Many are curious how Amazon will handle the controversial show host, but fans are thrilled to learn that the trio is returning and feel it is BBC’s loss.

Clarkson gave a bit of a dig to his former employer with the following statement “I feel like I’ve climbed out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship.”   May, who will also be co-hosting the new show gave the following comment about the deal, “We have become part of the new age of Smart TV.  Ironic, isn’t it?”

We will keep you posted on any updates regarding the launch date of the new series.  Stay tuned…

Craig Ferguson performs Dec. 3 at the Fillmore Miami Beach. (Live Nation)

Repost of article By Ben Crandall

Craig Ferguson will bring the intelligent, off-the-cuff wit that distinguished his decade hosting “The Late Late Show” to the Fillmore Miami Beach on Dec. 3, with tickets on sale 10 a.m. Friday, July 31.

Reserved-seat tickets are $59.50, $45 and $35 at the theater box office (1700 Washington Ave.), LiveNation.com and at . A LiveNation presale begins 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A Scottish-born U.S. citizen who greeted audiences at his CBS talk show with “It’s a great day for America, everybody!,” Ferguson was something of a cultish figure who worked in the shadows of David Letterman, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart.

His final appearance as host of “The Late Late Show” in December was an under-appreciated event (compared to the hype accorded his late-night brethren), a fate that seemed fitting for Ferguson’s show, a gloriously low-rent affair co-hosted by a pantomime horse and a skeleton robot named Geoff.

Broadway’s summer hit An Act of God breaks $1Mil to join the Million Dollar Club this past week with a 96.33% capacity!  Even more remarkable is that Broadway overall saw a 4.2% decline, yet An Act of God was one of the few exceptions to see  an increase.  See chart below of its historical track record.

As of July 12, 2015, the play had already exceeded it’s $2.9 Mil capital investment, so became profitable.   But it still had yet to achieve crossing that threshold of a $1Mil per week in sales until this past week.

Congratulations to Joe Mantello, David Javerbaum, Jim Parsons, Christopher Fitgerald, Tim Kazurinsky and the entire creative team and crew!   With only 6 days left before the play closes, time to get your tickets if you have not already seen the play.

An Act of God is written by David Javerbaum, based on his book   directed by Tony® Award winner Joe Mantello, and stars four-time Emmy® winner Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, The Normal Heart), who plays himself as a body-inhabited by God, flanked by  Christopher Fitzgerald (Finian’s Rainbow, Young Frankenstein, Wicked, Chicago) who plays archangel Michael and Tim Kazurinsky (The Odd Couple, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and three Police Academy films) who plays the archangel Gabriel.

An Act of God is a 90-minute comedy where the Almighty and His devoted angels answer some of the deepest questions that have plagued mankind since Creation. He’s finally arrived to set the record straight… and He’s not holding back!   An Act of God is playing at Studio 54 through August 2, 2015.

Melissa McCarthy Image: Michael Buckner/Getty Images

Melissa McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone, both Groundlings alums, have just inked a deal to executive produce  Friends with Melissa, a single-camera comedy, where McCarthy will guest star in the pilot episode.  Friends with Melissa is written, executive produced and inspired by the real lives of Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras who witnessed McCarthy and Falcone and their friends from The Groundlings go on to star in blockbuster comedies and win Oscars as they toiled away writing for children’s television.

McCarthy and Falcone’s Friends with Melissa is the latest of several other production projects in development with TVLand, along with I Shudder which will star Hamish Linklater (Fantastic Four) and be produced by Dan Jinks and Paul Rudnick; and an untilted John Wells/John Riggi/Warner Horizon Television project inspired on the life of Kyle Richards from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

by Mayim Bialik

I spoke last week in Aachen, Germany at the Rhine-Westphalia Institute of Technology. It was an incredible trip and it was my first time to that part of Europe.

There are a lot of complicated and personal reasons why I had never been to any of these places, and visiting Aachen, which is on the Belgian/Netherlands border, seemed like a good way to break myself in to a part of the world I have never seen.

See Mayim Bialik Makes A Big Bang at RWTH Aachen University in Germany

It was lovely. The people were lovely. There was delicious food to eat on every side of the border. The tomatoes were stellar, no joke. The churches had more stained glass than I’ve ever seen in my life. Flowers everywhere. And people dress much more conservatively there, so I will add with a smile that I did not see the butt cheeks of anyone for the three days I was away, whereas in Los Angeles at this time of year, I am basically looking at the butt cheeks of every other person I interact with in the supermarket or while trying to get gas for my car. That’s how we roll in LA in the summer.

So, overall it was great! However, there are a few things I had not realized beforehand:

1. I missed my kids, but…

Of course I missed being with my sons, but let’s just lay it down right here: Flying without children on trans-Atlantic flights is a million times easier than flying with children on such flights. I recently took my boys to Israel and while we took a direct El Al flight which was “only” 14 hours, when flying with children on really any flight, every hour feels like an eternity. At any given time, they might need something, have to use the bathroom, get hungry, want access to carry on bags when they are hard to get to…

On this flight, I simply took care of myself and watched movies and ate at a leisurely pace without worrying that someone would need to use the potty right when I got everything all set up, and I could use the bathroom without a small person up in my face in a tiny cramped bathroom…It was honestly a piece of cake to fly 10 hours to Germany. Glad to be home with my boys now, but I could not believe what a piece of cake that flight was!

2. Speech and Being Speechless…

I actually stayed on the Netherlands side of the Germany/Netherlands border ( so you can see the region I was in), and it became clear pretty quickly (since in the town I stayed in there were no menus at restaurants in English) that in the Netherlands they do not speak German. Right. They speak Dutch which is similar in a lot of roots of words and such but it’s just not the same language. At all.

3. Speaking German

I don’t speak German, but I can read the German alphabet (since it’s written in English alphabet letters for the most part) and I was raised speaking Yiddish.

Note to those of you who don’t know much about Yiddish: Yiddish is phonetic German for the most part, written in the Hebrew alphabet. It’s one of about 30 such languages that the Jewish people created when they lived among non-Jews. (Ladino is phonetic Spanish written in Hebrew, as an example.) Yiddish is approximately 30% Hebrew, with variations in pronunciation (hence the Hebrew word Shabbat is Shabbos in Yiddish, and Hanukkah is actually pronounced chanikeh in Yiddish.)

Relativity Media is facing quite an uncertain future at the moment and perhaps could go bankrupt, after several deals that they closed on in recent months have fallen through.

Sony sent  a letter to Relativity earlier this past week stating its intention to terminate the deal made for US Rights to The Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rauch’s film, ‘The Bronze‘, the raunchy comedy which debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January.  Relativity had entered the $3 Mil pact with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions last January during the festival.

It seems that Relativity has been unable to satisfy, or ‘cure’ a number of provisions made in the contract.   Asd a result, a cure letter was sent and followed up with a notice of termination.

The Bronze, co-written by Rauch and her husband was produced by the Duplass brothers.  The film created quite a buzz at Sundance Film Festival for its creative sex scenes.   No comment has come from Sony or Relativity for the film which was due to release theatrically in the US in October 16, 2015.

Acccording to Hollywood Reporter, numerous sources state that Relativity titles are being shopped around by worried producers and Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh has placed cutbacks on use of company resources as well.   The company has failed ot meet a number of debt payment deadlines and potentially could face bankruptcy unless it finds a new equity source as early as this coming Wednesday.  There is no financial resources left to market and promote the upcoming release of The Bronze and other films.

Should relativity go bankrupt, lenders could get their money back by selling the company, Kavanaugh could buy back the company if he finds a new equity partner,  or the lenders could end up owning Relativity and appointing new leadership, restructuring the company.  If the latter is done, many films still could be released by Relativity.

Stay tuned as we will be following the outcome and what it means for future of The Bronze.
