Mayim Bialik & Ryan McPartlin Behind-The-Scenes of ‘The Flight Before Christmas’ airing on Lifetime TV starting December 5, 2015.

The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik is known for many things; her parenting advice, being a breast-feeding advocate, a vegan, an authoress, a Ph.D. in neuroscience, a STEM adovcate, a beloved actress who made Blossom an icon and now Amy Farrah Fowler one as well, a charitable heart and most of all a Jewish woman who has embraced her faith and its traditions.   So it may seem odd that Mayim recently had to embrace Christmas as part of a role she played in a new film coming out on Lifetime TV on December 5th called The Flight Before Christmas.

See the Production Journal of the A Flight Before Christmas (formerly known as Accidental Trip)

We have written several articles and included a production journal (see above link)  on the film while it was being made, but now you can get further behind-the-scenes perspective on the film.   Grok Nation, a site that Bialik started to allow more deeper discussions and knowledge on various topics sparked by posts from Bialik herself and guest contributors, has recently published two articles that take fans to learn more about Bialik’s journey as well as the Jewish screenplay writer of the film’s journey to make a Christmas film.  You don’t want to miss their recent posts on Grok Nation.   Check out the links below:

The Flight Before Christmas co-stars Ryan McPartlin with Bialik, along with Family Matters’  Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Payton, and was directed by Peter L. Sullivan.  The premise of the film is about a woman named Stephanie who is excited to take the next step in her relationship with her boyfriend by moving in with him.  Stephanie’s plans are quickly dashed, leaving her crushed when her boyfriend instead says he wants to break up with her.

Heartbroken and not wanting to spend Christmas alone, Stephanie boards a plane and heads to Connecticut to be with family, taking a red-eye on Christmas Eve.   On the flight, Stephanie is seated next to Michael(McPartlin), a man planning to propose to his college girlfriend.

Michael and Stephanie don’t quite see eye to eye at first and have a bit of a rocky start, but things turn worse when the pilot announces that a huge, unexpected snowstorm is crossing the country.  The flight that the two embarked on is now re-routed to a small town in Montana.

Stephanie manages to book the last available room in the town’s bed and breakfast, leaving Michael without a place to stay.   Putting aside their differences, Stephanie offers to share the room with Michael and try their best to get alone.
The Flight Before Christmas airs on Lifetime TV on December 5 at various times, depending on your local region.   You can also join the free trial of mylifetime.com movie club to stream the film when it is released on the 5th if you are out of the United States of America.

With Children Adopted From Foster Care and Their New Families

Christina Aguilera, Jason Derulo, Rascal Flatts and Ed Sheeran Perform

LL COOL J, star of NCIS: LOS ANGELES, on the Network, will host the 17th annual A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, an entertainment special to be broadcast Friday, Dec. 18 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. For the first time, this annual entertainment special goes behind-the-scenes at concert venues across the country to introduce children adopted from foster care to their music idols, each one inspiring the other. Special performances are dedicated to these children and their new adoptive families, whose stories are featured in pre-taped segments to help raise awareness of this important social issue.

The musical performances include Christina Aguilera singing “Beautiful” in Los Angeles; Jason Derulo singing “Want to Want Me” and “In My Head” at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla.; Rascal Flatts singing “My Wish” and “I Like the Sound of That” at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, Calif.; and Ed Sheeran singing “Thinking Out Loud” and “Photograph” at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Field segments are produced by award-winning documentary filmmakers Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist.

                  CHILDREN WAITING:

Currently, there are more than 400,000 children in foster care in the United States. The inspirational “Children Waiting” segment gives voice to these forgotten children by creating an intimate portrait of their hopes, their dreams and their wish for a “Forever Family.”

Each year, the special inspires thousands of families to consider adopting children in foster care, some of whom have been featured on the special.

Families featured on this year’s special include:

                  MOOK FAMILY (PITTSBURGH, PA.)

Detective Jack Mook of the Pittsburgh Police Department didn’t have plans to become a father when he started coaching street kids Joshua and Jesse, who had come to the gym looking for a safe place to spend the afternoon. He became close to them, taking them to dinner, buying them books and shoes. One day, they vanished, and Mook relentlessly tracked them down.  He found them right before Christmas, living in deplorable conditions in a foster home, and got an emergency order to take them into his home.  The boys have been thriving ever since.  Jesse and Joshua are “A” students, and Joshua is in training, aiming for the Tokyo Olympic Boxing team.

                  VILES FAMILY (SEATTLE, WASH.)

College sweethearts Josh and Sarah Viles married and decided to adopt from foster care.  Their social worker emailed them about Alex and his little sister, Brittney who had been pulled from appalling circumstances. Five-year-old Alex had often been left alone to take care of his little sister. “The day they took us into foster care, I didn’t know what would happen, and I was worried about my sister,” he said. The Viles knew that if they didn’t say “yes,” they would never know if the siblings might be separated, and didn’t want to let that happen. Today, the children are thriving with their adopted brother, Baylen.

                  LEVY FAMILY (CANYON COUNTRY, CALIF.)

After Bob, a former foster child, and Carlotta Levy had their two sons, they decided to adopt a child from foster care. The Levys received a call about a little girl, Moriah, born drug-addicted, and who had shaken baby syndrome. The couple was told that she may never be able to walk. Adopted by the Levys, Moriah overcame the odds. Today, she is a gifted singer and dancer and has gained acceptance into a performing arts college.

                  ODEN FAMILY (LOS ANGELES, CALIF.)

Kenneth and Evette Oden both had children from previous marriages when they decided to adopt Kyle and Kynnedy. The children each needed immediate placement. “I remember looking in their eyes and the bond I felt was so strong,” said Kenneth. Today, both children are high-achievers in school, and Kyle is captain of his track team.

                  ALFONSO-MONREAL FAMILY (LONG BEACH, CALIF.)

Tonie and Bianca Alfonso-Monreal knew they wanted to be mothers someday. “When we looked into adoption, we knew that was the path for us as two women together,” said Bianca.  In 2013, the couple adopted their 4-year-old son, Jacob, who had moved through three foster homes in the first 18 months of his life. Today, Jacob is excelling in school. “I just can’t imagine life without our son. If you’re thinking about adopting, you have the chance to give a child the love that they deserve. And there are so many amazing children still waiting,” said Tonie.

The 17th annual A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS is produced by Triage Entertainment and Goldsmith Entertainment. Karen Mack, Stu Schreiberg, Stephen Kroopnick and Marilyn Seabury are the executive producers. Family stories are produced by Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist with Kimberly Steer the supervising producer. Kelly Brock is producer, Mary Donaldson is coordinating producer, and Michael Simon is directing the special.

The special is presented in association with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and the Children’s Action Network. Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, who was adopted, established the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national non-profit public charity, in 1992.  It is dedicated to dramatically increasing the adoptions of children in North America’s foster care system.

The Children’s Action Network (CAN) was founded in 1990 by leaders in the entertainment industry in order to harness the power of the entertainment media on behalf of children.  The special is a part of CAN’s National Adoption Campaign to raise awareness of the joys of adopting and to find homes for the children who are waiting.

New PSAs Focus on Educational Support for Children in Low-Income Neighborhoods

CBS Stars Mayim Bialik, Luis Guzmán, Téa Leoni, LL COOL J, Chi McBride,
Shemar Moore, Jeff Probst and Tom Selleck To Be Featured

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Tuesday, Nov. 24 – The “I Have A Dream” Foundation (IHDF) and CBS Cares have joined together to create a public service campaign focusing on educational support and mentoring for young students in low-income areas.

Christmas- and Hanukkah-themed IHDF public service announcements featuring Mayim Bialik (THE BIG BANG THEORY) and LL COOL J (NCIS: LOS ANGELES) will launch online and across CBS Interactive platforms onWednesday, Nov. 25. On Friday, Nov. 27, the PSAs will begin to air nationally on the CBS Television Network and on local CBS stations across the country.

The IHDF/CBS Cares PSA campaign will continue in 2016, featuring CBS stars Luis Guzmán (CODE BLACK), Téa Leoni (MADAM SECRETARY), Chi McBride (HAWAII FIVE-0), Shemar Moore (CRIMINAL MINDS), Jeff Probst (SURVIVOR), Tom Selleck (BLUE BLOODS) and more.

“These powerful CBS Cares PSAs shine a light on the urgent need to increase access to higher education for children from low-income communities,” said Donna A. Lawrence, President and CEO of the National “I Have A Dream” Foundation.  “The campaign will boost the visibility of IHDF’s work and help break the cycle of poverty for thousands of families across the country, making the dream of a college education a reality for their children.”

“The ‘I Have A Dream’ Foundation impacts diversity and education, two top priorities for the CBS Corporation,” said Josie Thomas, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, CBS Corporation. “This collaboration is an opportunity that will help increase awareness and further the Foundation’s crucial mission of providing long-term support programs aimed at increasing high school graduation and college completion for students in under-resourced public schools.”

“The ‘I Have A Dream’ program was monumental for me,” says Dreamer alumna Zairia Benjamin, an accomplished social worker. “My earliest memories always involve the volunteers who made me feel important because of how much they invested in me. I am lucky to be a product of their investment, and appreciative and aware of how much I was given and the kind of support a person needs to do well.”

Every student in the IHDF program receives guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education as well as continued support on their college journey. In addition to financial support, IHDF provides students with academic support and life skills as well as mental and social encouragement.  Since 1981, “I Have A Dream” Foundation programs have operated in 28 states, Washington, D.C., and New Zealand, together serving nearly 17,000 students.

“Diversity is important to all that CBS does as a company, and we are proud of this partnership between CBS Cares and the IHDF,” said Tony Ambrosio, Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer, CBS Corporation. “We hope that these PSAs will further IHDF’s important mission of helping children in low-income communities, fulfilling their dreams of a higher education and career.”

                  About CBS Cares:

At the heart of CBS’s public service commitment are the multi award-winning CBS Cares campaigns, consisting of PSAs that usually feature talent from a wide array of CBS programming. Approximately 200 million viewers see one or more of the CBS Cares campaigns each year. These PSAs have embraced a number of causes, none more important than diversity and tolerance. The Nelson Mandela Foundation partnered with CBS Cares for Mr. Mandela’s first-ever PSAs on tolerance in the U.S. These PSAs were seen in the U.S. and 82 other countries. Each year, CBS Cares airs PSAs to honor Black History Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Native American Heritage Month.  CBS Cares also worked with the NAACP in developing PSAs that marked its 100th anniversary. Additionally, it worked with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Trust on PSAs to raise funds for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. CBS Cares annually marks the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with PSAs featuring Congressman John Lewis, who marched with Dr. King. CBS Cares annually marks Memorial Day and Veterans Day with special PSAs honoring American military veterans. Another set of PSAs honor the victims of the Nazi Holocaust and run annually on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
