Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2016 Drama League Awards!
The 2016 Drama League Awards were held at the Marriott Marquis Times Square on May 20 with the ceremonies hosted by Zachary Levi and Megan Hilty. The 2016 Directing Fellows of The Drama League Directors Projects were introduced during the ceremony by Drama League artistic director Roger T. Danforth. They list of Directors Project Directing Fellows included Noa Egozi, Drew Feldman, Sara Holdren, Candis Jones, Yavor Kostov, Katie Lupica, James Palmer, Jesca Prudencio, Ilana Ransom Toeplitz, Chloe Treat, and Shaun Patrick Tubbs.
Hamilton won Outstanding Production of a Musical; The Humans – Outstanding Production of a Play; Outstanding Revival of a Musical-The Color Purple; Outstanding Revival of a Play – A View From the Bridge; with Lin-Manuel Miranda taking home the Distinguished Performance Award for his participation and role in Hamilton.
Lyricist Sheldon Harnick was also honored with the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award; Deaf West Theater with the Unique Contribution to the Theater Award; and Ivo van Hove was awarded the high honor of the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing.
The Drama League “honors distinguished productions, performances, and exemplary career achievements in musical theatre and directing.” The awards historically began in 1922 and were formalized in 1935 into the Drama League Awards. They are the oldest theatrical honors in America, and are the only major theatergoer awards chosen by audience (specifically the thousands of Drama League nationwide) members who attend Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
