The Drama League “honors distinguished productions, performances, and exemplary career achievements in musical theatre and directing.”  The awards historically began in 1922 and were formalized in 1935 into the Drama League Awards.   They are the oldest theatrical honors in America, and are the only major theatergoer awards chosen by audience (specifically the thousands of Drama League nationwide) members who attend Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
