The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) will announce the the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards nominees  on December 14 and we will bring you the full list of nominees, so bookmark this page as we will be updating this post with the full list of nominees as they are announced.

TJ Miller will be hosting the Awards ceremonies this year which will be held on January 17, 2016 at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica California and aired lived on A&E, Lifetime and LMN at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.   The program will be expanded to a three-hour event, following a live one-hour red carpet pre-show coverage.

For the first year since the awards, both film and television will be awarded at the same time and same ceremony.   In the past awards for film occurred in January whereas awards for Television occurred in May.   This year television entries must have episodes that have completed and aired between June 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.   For many shows that would mean submissions would come from the current season, or for summer shows, this past summer.

“We are thrilled to bring the two Critics’ Choice Awards shows into one super-show,” said President Joey Berlin during a breakfast reception at the W Hotel in Hollywood. “Bringing all these stars together in one room is going to create an incredible night of entertainment.”

Combining the two mediums will not in any way eliminate any categories, according to Berlin. “Members will make all the nominations and vote for all the winners in the same categories as we have in the past,” he explained. “And we’ll be presenting all the major film and television categories live on air in one glamorous and star-studded TV special.”

The combination of film and television have made some questions raise as to the comparison of the Critics’ Choice Awards to the Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards.   Berlin justified the combination with, “our voters are perhaps less star-struck and a bit savvier than our foreign peers. While the Globes have long been the party of the year, we believe the Critics’ Choice Awards are a little smarter, a little more in touch with American and Canadian tastes, and ultimately more useful to the viewers and ticket buyers.”

Here is a schedule of what is yet to come before the Awards ceremony on January 17:

December 14, 2015 – Critics’ Choice Awards nominees announced

January 13, 2016 – Final ballots go out to the BTJA/ members

January 14, 2016 – Deadline for returning final ballots

January 17 2016 – Live Red Carpet event and Awards Ceremony airing on A&E, Lifetime and LMN.

The BFCA is comprised of approximately 300 members and the BTJA approximately 100 members who will be eligible to vote.

Congratulations to all of the nominees!

AMC NETWORKS INC. REPORTS SECOND QUARTER 2015 RESULTS

Second Quarter Highlights (1):

  • Net revenues increased 15.1% to $601 million
  • AOCF2 increased 21.9% to $191 million
  • Operating income increased 22.7% to $159 million

New York, NY – August 6, 2015: AMC Networks Inc. (“AMC Networks” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: AMCX) today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2015. “AMC Networks had a strong second quarter, with double digit growth in revenues, AOCF and operating income driven by our continued focus on investing in high-quality programming,” said Josh Sapan, President and Chief Executive Officer of AMC Networks. “In addition to maintaining our core content strategy, we have become more of an owner of content; we have closely aligned ourselves with a premier producer of content through our BBC AMERICA joint venture; and we have expanded our global distribution footprint to include 140 countries and territories. This strategic approach has enabled us to diversify our sources of revenue and has set us up well for an increasingly digital future, one in which consumers exercise more choice and control over every minute of television they watch. We believe this strategy will continue to allow us to create value for our shareholders in the near, mid and long term.” Second quarter net revenues increased 15.1%, or $79 million, to $601 million over the second quarter of 2014, led by 22.8% growth at National Networks which was partially offset by a decrease of $12 million at International and Other.  Adjusted Operating Cash Flow (“AOCF”)2 totaled $191 million, an increase of 21.9%, or $34 million, versus the prior year period.  National Networks AOCF increased 33.3% and International and Other AOCF decreased $11 million versus the prior year period.  Operating income was $159 million, an increase of 22.7%, or $29 million, versus the prior year period.  The operating income increase resulted from 33.9% growth at National Networks partially offset by an increase of $13 million in operating loss at International and Other.  As discussed in the “Other Matters” section of this release, results reflected the impact of the BBC AMERICA acquisition. For the six months ended June 30, 2015, net revenues increased $223 million, or 21.3%, to $1.270 billion, AOCF increased $127 million, or 39.0%, to $451 million, and operating income increased $112 million, or 40.6%, to $390 million. Second quarter net income from continuing operations was $83 million ($1.14 per diluted share), compared with $60 million ($0.83 per diluted share) in the second quarter of 2014.  The increase was primarily related to the growth in operating income and an increase in miscellaneous, net income related to foreign currency transaction gains.

  1. Comparative results affected by the BBC AMERICA acquisition in 2014.
  2. See definition of Adjusted Operating Cash Flow (“AOCF”) included in the discussion of non-GAAP financial measures on page 3 of this earnings release.

Net income from continuing operations for the six months ended June 30, 2015 was $204 million ($2.81 per diluted share), compared with $132 million ($1.83 per diluted share) in the prior year period. Net cash provided by operating activities was $190 million for the six months ended June 30, 2015, an increase of $13 million from the prior year period.  The increase was primarily the result of the improved operating performance partially offset by an increase in tax payments.  Free Cash Flow3 for the six months ended June 30, 2015 was $157 million, a decrease of $2 million from the prior year period.  The decrease reflects the increase in net cash provided by operating activities offset by an increase in capital expenditures over the prior year period.

National Networks National Networks principally consists of the Company’s five nationally distributed programming networks, AMC, WE tv, BBC AMERICA, IFC and SundanceTV. National Networks revenues for the second quarter 2015 increased 22.8% to $489 million, AOCF grew 33.3% to $183 million, and operating income rose 33.9% to $168 million, all compared to the prior year period. National Networks revenues for the six months ended June 30, 2015 increased 24.2% to $1.051 billion, AOCF grew 38.5% to $436 million, and operating income rose 38.8% to $408 million, all compared to the prior year period. Second quarter growth in revenues was led by a 29.3% increase in distribution revenues to $303 million.  The increase in distribution revenues was primarily attributable to increases in affiliate fees, including the inclusion of BBC AMERICA, as well as increases in digital, licensing and home video revenues.  Advertising revenues increased 13.4% to $186 million.  The growth in advertising revenues reflected the inclusion of BBC AMERICA in the current year period as well as strong growth at WE tv, IFC and SundanceTV. Second quarter AOCF increased 33.3% to $183 million reflecting the increase in revenues partially offset by an increase in operating expenses.  The increase in operating expenses was primarily attributable to the inclusion of BBC AMERICA in the current year period as well as higher programming expenses at the other domestic networks.  The operating income increase reflected the growth in AOCF partially offset by an increase in amortization expense.

International and Other International and Other principally consists of AMC Networks International, the Company’s international programming business; IFC Films, the Company’s independent film distribution business; and various developing digital content distribution initiatives. International and Other revenues for the second quarter of 2015 decreased $12 million to $113 million, AOCF declined $11 million to $9 million, and operating income decreased $13 million to a loss of $9 million, all compared to the prior year period. International and Other revenues for the six months ended June 30, 2015 increased $18 million to $219 million, AOCF improved $6 million to $14 million, and operating loss increased $1 million to a loss of $19 million, all compared to the prior year period. The decrease in second quarter revenues reflected a decline at AMC Networks International primarily related to foreign currency fluctuations. Second quarter AOCF principally reflected the decline in revenues as operating expenses were essentially flat.  The operating loss reflected the decrease in AOCF as well as an increase in amortization expense. Other Matters BBC AMERICA Transaction As previously disclosed, on October 23, 2014, the Company entered into a long-term equity partnership agreement with BBC Worldwide.  Under the terms of the agreement, the Company invested $200 million to acquire a 49.9% equity stake in the cable channel BBC AMERICA.  The Company has operational control of BBC AMERICA and its results are included in the Company’s consolidated statement of income from the agreement date, October 23, 2014, to June 30, 2015, which affects the comparability of our results. Chellomedia Acquisition As previously disclosed, on January 31, 2014, the Company completed its acquisition of substantially all of Chellomedia, the international content division of Liberty Global plc, for €750 million (approximately $1.0 billion).  Results for Chellomedia are included in the Company’s consolidated statement of income from the acquisition date, January 31, 2014, to June 30, 2015, which affects the comparability of our results. Please see the Company’s Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2015 for further details regarding the above matters. Description of Non-GAAP Measures The Company defines Adjusted Operating Cash Flow (“AOCF”), which is a non-GAAP financial measure, as operating income (loss) before depreciation and amortization, share-based compensation expense or benefit, and restructuring expense or credit. Because it is based upon operating income (loss), AOCF also excludes interest expense (including cash interest expense) and other non-operating income and expense items. The Company believes that the exclusion of share-based compensation expense or benefit allows investors to better track the performance of the various operating units of the business without regard to the effect of the settlement of an obligation that is not expected to be made in cash. The Company believes that AOCF is an appropriate measure for evaluating the operating performance of the business segments and the Company on a consolidated basis. AOCF and similar measures with similar titles are common performance measures used by investors, analysts and peers to compare performance in the industry. Internally, the Company uses net revenues and AOCF measures as the most important indicators of its business performance, and evaluates management’s effectiveness with specific reference to these indicators. AOCF should be viewed as a supplement to and not a substitute for operating income (loss), net income (loss), and other measures of performance presented in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). Since AOCF is not a measure of performance calculated in accordance with GAAP, this measure may not be comparable to similar measures with similar titles used by other companies. For a reconciliation of AOCF to operating income (loss), please see page 7 of this release. The Company defines Free Cash Flow from Continuing Operations, (“Free Cash Flow”), which is a non-GAAP financial measure, as net cash provided by operating activities (continuing operations) less capital expenditures (continuing operations), both of which are reported in our Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows. Net cash provided by operating activities excludes net cash provided by operating activities of discontinued operations. The Company believes the most comparable GAAP financial measure of its liquidity is net cash provided by operating activities. The Company believes that Free Cash Flow is useful as an indicator of its overall liquidity, as the amount of Free Cash Flow generated in any period is representative of cash that is available for debt repayment, investment, and other discretionary and non-discretionary cash uses. The Company also believes that Free Cash Flow is one of several benchmarks used by analysts and investors who follow the industry for comparison of its liquidity with other companies in the industry, although the Company’s measure of Free Cash Flow may not be directly comparable to similar measures reported by other companies. For a reconciliation of Free Cash Flow to net cash provided by operating activities, please see page 8 of this release. The Company defines Adjusted Earnings per Diluted Share (“Adjusted EPS”), which is a non-GAAP financial measure, as earnings per diluted share from continuing operations less amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets, net of tax.  The Company uses this financial measure to evaluate the Company’s performance exclusive of the impact of the non-cash amortization charge.  Please see page 9 of this release for a reconciliation of this measure to earnings per diluted share from continuing operations. Also ordered straight to series is docudrama The West, Executive Produced by Emmy® Award winning Stephen David Entertainment (The World Was, The Men Who Built America) in association with Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn from Redford’s  Sundance Productions (who will oversee the project).   Eight one-hour episodes have been ordered which will premiere in the Summer of 2016, with production to start in August.

The West will transpoert viewers into the violent world of coboys, Indians, outlaws and law men, chronicling the intimate and little-known stories of Western legends such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatgt Earp, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Spanning the years 1865 to 1890, the limited event series will show how, in the aftermath of the Civil War, the opportunity of land transforms the United States into the “land of opportunity” and creates modern America. “The West” will also feature exclusive interviews with notable names from classic Western films, including James Caan, Tom Selleck, Kiefer Sutherland, Ed Harris and more.

The final seven episodes of the Western drama Hell on Wheels will also air in Summer of 2016.

The Making of the Mob, also Executive Produced by Stephen David Entertainment, has been renewed for eight more episodes for a second season.

The Making of The Mob: Chicago will premiere in 2016 and document the emergence of organized crime in Middle America through the rise and fall of iconic gangster Al Capone. From Capone’s early days in New York running the streets with Lucky Luciano and Bugsy Siegel, to his prolonged war with the Irish gangs of Chicago and his final battles with Eliot Ness and law enforcement, The Making of the Mob: Chicago will tell the true and full story of the Chicago underworld.

The season two renewal follows the success of AMC’s first installment of the series, The Making of The Mob: New York, which has delivered an average of 1.5 million viewers and 626,000 adults 25-54 through six episodes in live+3 ratings. The finale will air Monday, August 3rd at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead:

The Walking Dead‘s previous Executive Producer, David Alpert and Executive Producer & Showrunner Dave Erickson joined Executive Producer  & Director Adam Davidson and cast members Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Frank Dillane, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lorenzo James Henrie and Mercedes Mason made up the panel at the TCA update today.

Fear the Walking Dead was greenlit back in March for two seasons. The series will debut in the U.S. Sunday, August 23rd at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT with an extended 90-minute episode.  The premiere will also air on AMC Global channels around the world simultaneously and will then re-air in local time zones during primetime.*  A special episode of Talking Dead, hosted by Chris Hardwick (Nerdist), will follow the season one finale on Sunday, October 4th at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (U.S. only).

Fear the Walking Dead is executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert and showrunner David Erickson and produced by AMC Studios. The series stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Liza, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia and Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris.

The session started with some clips from Season 1, Episode 3 of Fear The Walking Dead being shown, depicting Los Angeles starting to fall apart with riots, power failures and spread of an unnamed plague.

Fear the Walking Dead explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) have managed to assemble.  The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down.  A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.  “By the end of Season 1 we know the world has changed and it is the end of the world as we know but it not yet at the point where Rick woke up in Georgia,” said showrunner Erickson of the pace of the new series. “We come to realize the world has changed but our characters are still insulated from all of what has happened,”he added. “Part of what they will see in Season 2 will be that.” He continued to say that the next cycle of episodes will explore how things are fractured for this family as the show progresses, also noting that season 3 has yet to be ordered.

Into the Badlands:

AMC’s new martial arts drama series Into the Badlands will premiere Sunday, November 15th at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.  In a land controlled by feudal barons, Into the Badlands tells the story of a ruthless, well-trained warrior named Sunny (Daniel Wu) and a young boy named M.K. (Aramis Knight) who embark on a spiritual journey across a dangerous land. From AMC Studios, the six-part series is created by executive producers/showrunners/writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Shanghai Noon, “Smallville”), and executive produced by Oscar®-nominated producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction, Contagion), director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, Shanghai Nights), fight director Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero, House of Fury) and Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero).

Into The Badlands is an exciting moment for us in that martial arts is not only a new genre for an AMC series, but also one that has been largely absent from television for 15 years,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming for AMC and SundanceTV.  “The team behind Into The Badlands, led by showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, is comprised of some of the best martial artists and martial arts filmmakers in the world, and they have crafted a show that over-delivers against two big goals we set for the show: to create a compelling character drama, and to introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series.”

The series premiere will coincide with AMC’s newest movie event, “AMC FightFest,” a two-week martial arts movie marathon beginning Monday, November 2through Friday, November 13. The on-air special event will feature some of the most iconic martial arts films in the history of the genre each weeknight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

“In the same way AMC has historically engaged fanbases from horror through Westerns, ‘AMC FightFest’ is an opportunity for us to connect with and serve martial arts fans,” said Tom Halleen, executive vice president of programming and scheduling for AMC and SundanceTV.  “We are building an exciting lineup of films that target their passion for the genre as we prepare them for the amazing debut of Into the Badlands.”

Into the Badlands is set centuries from now, where a feudal society has emerged and the strongest and most brutal rose to wealth and power. This area came to be called the Badlands, and is divided among seven rival Barons who control the resources necessary to daily life and enforce their rule with the aid of loyal armies known as Clippers. Clippers enjoy status and comforts the general population can only dream of, and they are willing to sacrifice their lives in service to their Barons.  Few Clippers ever live to see their 30th birthday, but Sunny (Daniel Wu) is no ordinary Clipper. Demonstrating lethal proficiency in martial arts, Sunny rose swiftly through the ranks to become Quinn’s (Marton Csokas) Head Clipper and most trusted advisor.

For decades, Quinn has been unchallenged as the Badlands’ most powerful Baron, but the territory’s newest Baron, The Widow (Emily Beecham), has begun staging brazen attacks on Quinn’s transport vehicles and is testing his appetite for a fight.  One of those attacks leads Sunny to M.K. (Aramis Knight), a teenage boy who has survived a deadly ambush.  Sunny soon comes to understand that the teen harbors a dark secret and has a hefty bounty on his head.  As The Widow continues her campaign against Quinn, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined.  In their evolution as teacher and student, each will discover his true purpose; together, they will embark on an odyssey that could mean the difference between chaos and enlightenment for everyone in the Badlands.

Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero) as Sunny; Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as Quinn; Aramis Knight (The Dark Knight Rises) as M.K.;  Oliver Stark (“Luther”) as Ryder; Emily Beecham (28 Weeks Later) as Widow; Orla Brady (“Dr. Who,” “Fringe”) as Lydia; Sarah Bolger (“Once Upon a Time,” “The Tudors”) as Jade; Ally Ioannides (“Parenthood”) as Tilda; and Madeleine Mantock (Edge of Tomorrow) as Veil.

BBC America:

Doctor Who was hot on everyone’s minds.   Executive Producer Steven Moffat was not ready to reveal what role Maisie Williams will have this new season but did tease “she isn’t playing a returning character or someone in the Doctor’s past. Her role will develop in an unexpected way.”

Doctor Who returns to BBC America on September 19 and audiences who attended San Diego International Comic-Con earlier this month were able to see Williams appear i the latter part of the trailer.

Fathom Events has been able to experience  this year on September 15-16 the two-part Season 8 finale ‘Doctor Who:  Dark Water/Death in Heaven‘ in RealD 3D and Dolby Atmos, along with a special prequel scene for the first episode of Season 9, The Doctor’s Meditation and an exclusive interview with Doctor Who stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman that is hosted by Wil Wheaton.  This leads to the question of whether or not a Doctor Who will be made into a movie or not.

Moffat addressed his concerns,“First that would be up to the BBC. What are we going to do? Shut down for a year and make a movie? Does everyone want that — a whole movie and not a series? If there’s a movie, you can’t have a different doctor in the movie — that would be incredibly damning to the franchise.”

BBC America today also announced two new co-productions – the first co-developed series under the wide-ranging, creative partnership between BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks that was announced late last year.* Undercover, a gripping political thriller from acclaimed writer Peter Moffat (Silk, Criminal Justice) starring Sophie Okonedo (Criminal Justice) and Adrian Lester (Hustle), and Thirteen, a compelling contemporary mystery from rising star Marnie Dickens, will both air on BBC America in 2016.

Sarah Barnett, President and General Manager, BBC America, also announced the first tranche of an extensive original scripted development slate including:

  • Dirk Gently,an adaptation of Douglas Adams’ (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) wildly successful comic novel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, is an anthology series set in the unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, ridiculous Dirk Gently.  With an utterly fresh, comically self-aware tone, this series is equally sincere in its danger, humor, violence and drama.  Penned by Max Landis – the mind behind cult classic Chronicle – this series is produced by IDW, Circle of Confusion and Ideate for BBC America.
  • An untitled project from prolific filmmaker Sebastian Silva. Using unconventional storytelling – including real people – Silva explores humorous, absurd and uncomfortably raw stories of 21st century dating in our impulsive era of swiping and liking. Sebastian Silva is the writer/director of 2015 Sundance and Berlinale selection Nasty Baby starring Kristen Wiig and Golden Globe®-nominated The Maid. A24 is attached to produce.
  • Moths, follows a young American woman whose reckless quest for thrill and adventure takes her to the epicenter of Tokyo’s Shibuya sub-culture scene. After an unthinkable crime occurs, she finds herself face-to-face with an unfamiliar, ancient and intractable world. Tony Wood and Cineflix are attached to produce.
  • The Greater Good from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dana Shapiro (Murderball) is the provocative, fictionalized story of Cora Jones, lone survivor of the Jonestown massacre where 918 of her fellow cult members died. She was saved, she believes, to rid the world of false prophets but, as her own fame as an atheist preacher grows, she begins to morph into the very thing she’s been railing against. This compelling drama about faith, family, hubris, paranoia and healing is also a cautionary tale about the rise and fall of an American leader. It is produced by Lakeshore Entertainment (Underworld).
  • An untitled comic-noir thriller from Anders August set in a 1950s resort follows the social climbing of a disarming young woman who turns out to be a dangerous sociopath. Anders August wrote the Oscar-nominated film The Pig and was executive producer of Follow the Money which premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival. Michael London (The IllusionistSideways) is attached to produce.
  • An untitled project from Anna Winger.   A family drama, an amped up adventure, and a celebration of the city of Berlin today, this journey is a darkly humorous exploration of colliding worlds, the unifying bonds of loss, and the dangerous pursuit of answers in a utopian city. Anna Winger is the creator of international series, Deutschland ’83.

Barnett, commented: “The scripted TV explosion in recent years has affirmed over and over that strong visionaries are the heart of creative and commercial success. At BBC America we’re doubling down on extraordinary creator-led projects.”

The two new co-productions, Undercover and Thirteen, will join BBC America’s slate of original scripted shows that includes the iconic series Doctor Who (returns September 19); Orphan Black (returns for a fourth season in 2016); The Last Kingdom (premieres October 10) and Luther (fourth installment premieres winter 2015).

“The BBC is a creative powerhouse and we’re delighted to partner with them on these provocative,   contemporary stories,” said Barnett. “Peter Moffat is one of the UK’s most vibrant and acclaimed screenwriters, while new talent Marnie Dickens brings a singular voice and perspective to her first original series. We can’t wait to launch these shows on the network.”

Undercover, a six part limited series, features lead character Maya (Okonedo) who is about to become the first black woman to hold the highest ranking public prosecutor role in England.

Just as her life comes under intense public scrutiny she discovers her husband Nick (Lester), and the father of her children, has been lying to her for years. Is he concealing an affair, or is it something altogether more sinister? If she digs up his real past will she jeopardize her own future? What price do you pay for uncovering lies? And who wants her in the top job, and why?

Peter Moffat says: “I’m relishing the prospect of returning to the contemporary British political landscape to look at where we stand and how we got here. Undercover is a thriller about identity, trust and the struggle to lead a morally principled personal and professional life, while working up close with the police, press, politicians and criminals who have so corrupted and damaged public life over the last 20 years.”

Undercover is executive produced by Hilary Salmon, Head of BBC Drama Production England, for BBC ONE and BBC America. She previously worked with Moffat on his hit legal series Silk and Bafta-winning Criminal Justice.

Thirteen is a new original five part mystery thriller which follows Ivy Moxham (Jodie Comer) on the day she escapes from the cellar that has been her prison for the last 13 years. It’s the day she’ll return to her home, to her family, to her life. It’s the day that is only the beginning.

Thirteen is an emotional rollercoaster that explores how to pick up the threads of a life half-lived and how to survive as a family under the greatest pressure: how to feel again, chance love again. It is a psychological drama about who to trust when you can’t even trust yourself.

Asked about her first original series commission, Marnie Dickens says: “I’ve always been fascinated by the resilience of the human spirit in even the most extreme situations and am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this story to life on the BBC and BBC America.”

Thirteen is produced by BBC In-House Drama Production England and Executive Produced by Elizabeth Kilgarrif for BBC Three and BBC America.

*In October 2014 AMC Networks acquired a 49.9% stake, and operating control of BBC America as part of a wide-ranging creative partnership with BBC Worldwide. The long-term joint venture brings together two global brands that are behind some of the most-watched, most celebrated programming on television and includes the co-development of premium, quality programming.

A TOP 5 CABLE DRAMA LAUNCH AMONG ADULTS 25-54 THIS SEASON, “HUMANS” HAS AVERAGED 2 MILLION VIEWERS AND 1 MILLION ADULTS 25-54 THROUGH FOUR EPISODES IN THE U.S.

THE PREMIERE EPISODE WAS CHANNEL 4’S HIGHEST RATED ORIGINATED DRAMA IN 20 YEARS

NEW YORK / LONDONJuly 31, 2015 – AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos today announced that the critically acclaimed drama series “HUMANS” has been renewed for a second season. The series will return for eight new episodes, with production starting next year.

Penned by British writing partners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks,” Spooks: The Greater Good) and based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama “Real Humans” from Matador Films, the series stands as a top five cable drama launch among adults 25-54 in the U.S. this season and has averaged 2.0 million viewers and 1.0 million adults 25-54 through its first four episodes in live+3 ratings. The first episode was Channel 4’s highest rated originated drama in 20 years; season one has attracted an 18.0% share of the UK viewing audience on Sundays between 9:00-10:00pm.

Co-produced by AMC and Channel 4 with Kudos, the makers of “Utopia” and “Broadchurch,” the first season tapped into society’s preoccupation with and mistrust of advancing technology and artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human? Can the very traits through which we define humanity (love, trust, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice) be taught? What really is family?  Exploring humans’ inherent fear of the unknown and the possible implications of granting machines consciousness, the final episodes will leave viewers on a thrilling cliff-hanger.

“We’re so pleased to announce a second season of ‘Humans’ and extend our terrific partnership with Channel 4, Kudos and the stellar cast, crew and writers Sam and Jonathan,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and Sundance TV. “As one of the year’s top new cable series, ‘Humans’ has been embraced by fans and critics across the U.S. and UK. We’re looking forward to continuing this very captivating story and further exploring the show’s parallel, Synth-filled world that hits so disturbingly close to home.”

Piers Wenger, Head of Drama at Channel 4, said: “‘Humans’ has proved a huge hit with both audiences and critics alike this summer, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and to the team at Kudos for bringing a truly unmissable show to life. It also marks a key moment for Channel 4 as we expand our remit for bold and original drama into the international, co-production space. We look forward to working with our partners AMC on season two of ‘Humans’ and to more Synth-related adventures to come.”

Derek Wax, executive producer, Kudos, added: “As producers, we’re so thrilled to have been able to work with Sam and Jon on such provocative and challenging ideas and stories.  We’re delighted that viewers have connected with the series so wholeheartedly and look forward to continuing the wonderfully collaborative relationship with Channel 4 and AMC. And of course, going back to Synth School to learn some new moves for series two.”

“Humans” is written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and produced by Kudos in association with Matador Films. Executive producers are Derek Wax (“The Hour,” “Occupation,” “Lip Service”) and Chris Fry (“The Smoke,” “Spooks”) for Kudos, Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström for Matador Films. Season two was commissioned for Channel 4 by Simon Maxwell and Beth Willis, and Joel Stillerman and Kristin Jones for AMC.

Celebrated Dramas ‘The Americans’, ‘Empire’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Transparent’ Go Head-To-Head for the Title of Program of the Year

The 31st Annual TCA Awards will be presented on Saturday, August 8, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

LOS ANGELES – Thursday, June 4, 2015 – The Television Critics Association (TCA) — a media organization with more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists from the United States and Canada — announced today the nominations for the 31st Annual TCA Awards. The 2015 TCA Awards recognize outstanding television programming in the 2014-2015 season, honoring actors, producers and programs in a variety of categories, including news and information, youth, reality, drama and comedy. The winners of the 31st Annual TCA Awards will be announced at the invitation-only presentation on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, as part of the group’s bi-annual industry conference, the summer press tour. The celebrity host for the event will be announced later this month.

The nominations are spread across five broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW —as well as PBS, nine cable networks and Internet streaming services Netflix and Amazon. HBO leads the way with seven nominations; ABC, CBS, AMC, and FX each have five; Fox, PBS, The CW, and Amazon each have four; NBC and Comedy Central each have three; ABC Family has two; and Netflix, Starz, Logo, Nickelodeon and SundanceTV each finish with one. Martin’s esteemed book series; AMC’s decade-spanning ad agency mainstay “Mad Men”; and the first-year Amazon original series “Transparent.”

“TCA members face yet another difficult decision this year, as they prepare to cast their votes for the winners in each category. This was an incredible season for returning favorites and new additions alike, and we’re looking forward to seeing what our members have chosen as the best of the best, when the winners are announced on August 8,” said TCA President Scott D. Pierce, television critic at The Salt Lake Tribune.

The TCA Awards will also bestow a special Heritage Award trophy to one long-standing program that has had a major cultural or social impact. This year, the TCA members have nominated an impressive lineup of some of TV’s most memorable and groundbreaking series, featuring the long-running late night staple “Late Show/Late Night with David Letterman”; beloved sitcom “Friends”; police precinct drama “The Shield,” starring Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins; Gene Roddenberry’s influential sci-fi saga “Star Trek”; and the mind-bending small town murder mystery “Twin Peaks,” created by visionary auteur David Lynch.

In addition to honoring the absolute best that this year’s programming has to offer, the organization presents a Career Achievement Award to an individual who has influenced television through his or her work on the small screen.

Confused by the Emmys calendar? We can hardly blame you. While the current eligibility period officially runs from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015, the TV academy regularly grants exceptions to “hanging episodes” of eligible series — that is, one or more episodes airing outside the Emmy year — as long as they air prior to the final day of nomination voting, June 26.

Some of Emmy’s favorites are amongst the shows whose seasons will conclude after the soft deadline of Sunday, May 31, including Game of Thrones and Veep. But there are many more. Koh.  “As Plaintiffs have failed to allege an essential element of fraudulent concealment, and the Court has also concluded that Plaintiffs’ claims, as currently alleged, are time barred, the Court grants Defendants’ motion to dismiss Plaintiffs’ CAC. This dismissal is without prejudice, as the Court concludes that amendment would not necessarily be futile, as Plaintiffs may be able to allege sufficient facts to support their continuing violations claim and their equitable tolling claim. See Leadsinger, 512 F.3d at 532. In light of this conclusion, the Court does not reach the remainder of Defendants’ arguments in support of their motion to dismiss Plaintiffs’ CAC.  For the reasons stated above, the Court GRANTS Defendants’ motion to dismiss Plaintiffs’ CAC. Should Plaintiffs elect to file a Second Amended Complaint curing the deficiencies identified herein, Plaintiffs shall do so within 30 days of the date of this Order. Failure to meet the 30-day deadline to file a Second Amended Complaint or failure to cure the deficiencies identified in this Order will result in a dismissal with prejudice. William Hurt in AMC's new series 'Humans'

William Hurt in AMC’s new series ‘Humans’

Humans, a bold new eight-part drama series from Channel 4, Kudos and AMC, is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. William Hurt plays George Millican, a widower who has formed a close relationship with his out-of-date synth Odi (played by Will Tudor), who he treats more like a son than a piece of machinery.

Written by British writing partnership Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), Humans is based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans.

Humans, which also stars Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Colin Morgan, Rebecca Front, Neil Maskell, and Gemma Chan, recently finished filming in and around London. The series will premiere on AMC this summer (2015).

The series is produced by Kudos (Utopia, Broadchurch, The Hour) in association with Matador Films (Real Humans).  Executive producers are Jane Featherstone (Broadchurch, Utopia, The Hour) and Derek Wax (The Hour, Occupation, Lip Service) for Kudos and produced by Chris Fry (The Smoke) for Kudos, and Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström for Matador Films. Commissioned for Channel 4 by Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Simon Maxwell and Kristin Jones and Joel Stillerman for AMC. Distribution will be handled by Endemol Shine International.

  • BBC has officially terminated Jeremy Clarkson’s contract and dropped him from Top Gear.  Both James May and Richard Hammond have contracts the end this year as well and it is unclear whether they will renew or not.  BBC is determined to move forward and continue to find a replacement for Clarkson, but whether it will be successful and the show will remain as popular is in question.   Fan outpouring for support for Clarkson was astronomical and many have vowed to never watch the show again without Clarkson.   J Lord Tony Hall’s statement is below:

May and Hammond’s futures are also a bit unclear as both have stated they feel that the three (Clarkson, May and Hammond) of them are a package deal and their contracts are due this year as well.   One thing is certain, Clarkson is likely to land another job soon.  His popularity is wide and while he will not be able to bring the Top Gear format and title with him, he certainly can bring his creativity and talent to a fan base that was showed support through a recent petition to reinstate him at BBC.   It will be interesting to see where he lands and whether May and Hammond will follow.  Clarkson has yet to respond.
