Armando Iannucci, creator of the HBO hit series Veep, has decided to not take on a fifth season and will exit after Season 4.
“We have had conversations with Armando for some time about the challenges of maintaining his family life in London and producing a show in the states,” an HBO rep said in a statement. “Armando is not replaceable but we are confident that Veep will continue to be produced at the highest levels with new showrunner David Mandel. David has worked with HBO for many years as executive producer, writer and director for Curb Your Enthusiasm.” While no formal announcement has been given as far as renewal for Veep, given the accolades the show has received, it is inevitable that it will see a fifth season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has earned three consecutive Emmy wins for her role as Selina Meyer in the series and the show itself has received three Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Series, as well as won a Writers Guild Award for Best Comedy Series in 2014.
Iannucci has hinted for a while that he would likely leave the series and revealed last month at the British Film Instittute that he is working on a comedy about the death of Stalin. He indicated he is very much looking forward to doing something cinematic again.
Mandel worked with Dreyfus for three years on megat hit series Sienfeld and looks forward to reuniting with her on Veep. Other credits of Mandel’s include The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live.
