  • Brian Williams, NBC‘s Nightly News Anchor, told staff in a memo today that he is temporarily stepping away from the anchor desk.  His memo reads:

In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions.

As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.

As reported yesterday, NBC Nightly News chief, Deborah Turness announced that an internal investigation was underway.   This news of his stepping away from the anchor   position is not a huge surprise.

Meanwhile it is NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke that will decide as to what will and won’t be done relative to Brian Williams.  He will make the final call in determining what punishment will be placed on Williams.

  • Amidst the controversy and internal investigation going on at NBC Nightly News over Brian Williams’ admissions, he has cancelled his appearance on CBS‘ the Late Show with David Letterman, scheduled to air this Thursday.   Williams wanted to give Letterman‘s team plenty of time to seek a new guest in his spot.   Letterman in the meantime has been able to book Tom Hanks as a replacement for Williams on Thursday.
  • E! reality star Bruce Jenner was involved in a fatal vehicular crash that resulted in the death of one person on Saturday in Malibu.   Jenner was not injured in the four-car incident.   Originally it was thought that five paparazzi vehicles were chasing Jenner, thus explaining his rear-ending the car carrying the passenger that passed away.   However, since then Jenner has confirmed that while cameras were nearby, they did not play a factor in the accident.   According to LA County Sherriff’s office a gray Prius reportedly slowed two cars ahead of Jenner, causing the sedan in front of his SUV to pause, resulting in his vehicle rear-ending the car in front of him which was driven by an elderly woman who was pushed into oncoming traffice and killed when her vehicle was struck head-on by a Hummer (coming from the opposite direction).  Five other individuals were injured and taken to the local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.   Jenner was not filming anything for the reality show at the time of the accident.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office claim that the accident is still under further investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

  • Sony signed on John Lesher (Birdman) for Le Grisbi Productions and Megan Ellison (Foxcatcher) for Annapurna to join Eli Holzman to produce a feature adaptation of the documentary The Seven Five, previously produced by Holzman, about one of the most corrupt police forces in New York in the 1980’s.   Holzman will oversee the recruitment of the creative team on the project.  The Seven Five is about Michael Dowd, arrested in 1992 for leading a ring of dirty cops from 1986-1992, with crimes such as theft, abuse and drug dealing.   Dowd served a 14 year sentence as a result of indictments against him.
