As the European Film Market and Festival comes to a close in Berlin, the Golden Bear Awards ceremonies took place. Tonight was a message of Freedom of Speech with banned Iranian Jafar Panahi winning the top prize for his film Taxi. Working against Iranian ban from filmmaking and not being allowed to travel abroad, Panahi’s Taxi was well received by critics and buyers during the festival. Taxi has Panahi playing a cabbie who interviews the diverse characters that make up his fares, with a camera set on the dash of his yellow cab as he drives the streets of Tehran.
Pablo Larrain’s El Club took Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize; Patricio Guzman won Silver Bear for Best Script for The Pearl Button; Charlotte Ramping and Tom Courtenay both for their portrayals in 45 Years won Silver Bear Awards for Best Actress and Actor. The pair play a couple preparing for their 45th wedding anniversary when a secret from the past rocks their world. The Silver Bear Award for Best Director was a tie that went to Radu Jude for Aferim! and Małgorzata Szumowskia for Body.
