Eric Kaplan, one of the writers and co-executive producer on The Big Bang Theory, visited Denver to promote his new book, Does Santa Exist? I was lucky enough to get to meet him briefly on this visit.
Mr. Kaplan did a reading from his book, Does Santa Exist? while occasionally cutting in with a bit of commentary. It was very funny but also very thought provoking. I suppose that’s what Mr. Kaplan was going for. I can’t wait to start reading it. After the reading, it was time for questions. They ranged in topics from time paradoxes to television watching habits to why people are connected to fictional characters. Each question was answered with real thought and quick humor.
Eric Kaplan is funny, charming, and kind. He took time to actually talk to each person who was having their book signed. As a person who goes to their fair share of book signings, this is rarer than one would think. He spoke to one of my friends at length about her novel. When I mentioned that I have written an extensive amount of fan fiction about Sheldon and Amy from The Big Bang Theory, he was very good natured about it. He even joked about how he once wanted to give Sheldon and Amy a baby named “Toots” who he then drew in my newly purchased copy of his book.
On the subject of Kaplan’s day job, I don’t have any kind of scoop about The Big Bang Theory. Even if I was a real reporter, I’m sure that I couldn’t get anything substantial about plot lines or character development. However, I was told that there were some “good things” ahead for Sheldon and Amy. It was a nice tidbit to hear from someone in the know since I am such a fan of those two characters.
I just want to finish this up by saying, if you have events like this happening near you, go to them. Support the people who make the things you enjoy. You won’t regret it.
