Johnny Galecki is best known as Leonard on The Big Bang Theory, but after 10 seasons on the CBS sitcom, he wanted more from his stable career as a “hired gun” actor. Sifting through various projects in search of the right one to produce, the 40-year-old ultimately discovered The Master Cleanse, a horror/drama/comedy project from first-time filmmaker Bobby Miller.

The Master Cleanse delves into creature feature territory, with Galecki playing a lonely man who attends a spiritual retreat that promises to cleanse and purify his life, but ends up literally releasing his inner demons. Ahead of the film’s SXSW world premiere on March 13, EW has an exclusive, creepy clip from The Master Cleanse, above, and an interview with the Emmy-nominated actor.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You’ve had a very diverse career, from Christmas Vacation toRoseanne and The Big Bang Theory. With The Master Cleanse, were you looking for something strange to counteract the tone of the roles people might associate with you?
JOHNNY GALECKI:
When I first came aboard The Master Cleanse, purely as a producer, the writer-director, Bobby Miller, had another actor in mind. I gave him fair warning that if, for whatever reason, there might be a scheduling conflict with this actor, that I was not going to play his lead role. I had no interest in wearing both hats. There was a scheduling conflict with the initial actor, and everyone just ignored my cardinal rule. [Laughs.] [Bobby] called me and said, “Well, you have a wardrobe fitting tomorrow morning!” So, it was not the premeditation of playing the role whatsoever. I was as thrilled as I was terrified to take on those reins, but it wasn’t by design.

I hesitate, then, to call it an accident that you also starred in this film, but…
Feel free to call it an accident! It very much was. I endeavor to be a creative producer, and so a lot of what I had to contribute fortunately happened before we got to shooting. Being a producer was a bit of a distraction from the acting and some days vice versa.

Trailer Courtesy of Bobby Miller:

Still, at least tonally, this is a very different project for you. How do you, as an actor, prepare to make the jump from a mainstream comedy series like The Big Bang Theory to a low-budget indie movie?
I must admit it’s a welcome change. As much as I love The Big Bang Theory and playing Leonard 200-some episodes in, I think playing a departure from that character only serves that character once you return to him. The actors that I admire, that’s always been a part of their careers, that sense of unpredictability and diversity. If you liken it to a musician that’s been playing the same type of music for nine years, you jump at the chance to play in some sort of different genre. It’s much more exciting or liberating than it is even scary or challenging. But, goodness, I’ve been lonely before. That’s really the number one word to describe [my character] Paul Berger in The Master Cleanse. The poor guy is searingly lonely, and I think that’s universally relatable; I had plenty to pull from. The difference, and one of the things I really liked about the character, is that he’s not really aware of that. I’d like to think that I’m pretty self-aware; at least I try to be. [Laughs.] I can’t imagine anyone who would say differently. In Paul’s case, one of the things I loved about him is that he’s kind of emotionally arrested at this traumatic point from a previous relationship, and it’s kind of analogous to the slowly boiling frog. His life kind of unravels so slowly that he doesn’t even realize it’s in freaking shambles, and that’s fun to play.

How do you think your experience as an actor informed your work as a producer on The Master Cleanse? Were you more in step with certain aspects of production or was this a learning experience for you as well?
You can never predict how an audience is going to respond. But with 300-plus live studio audience episodes under my belt and dozens of theater productions in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, I mighthave a little bit — and please use italics when I say “might” — have a little bit more of an inkling than some other folks in the business of how an audience might react.

A Night At Sardi‘s has been a tradition for the Alzheimer’s Association for 23 years and tonight will be the 24th and final benefit event.   The Final Night at Sardi’s will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California where the stars will come out to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.

This year the event is chaired by Laurie Burrows Grad, James Burrows and Nicholas Grad where a special tribute will be held for the late Peter Grad, who co-founded and co-chaired ‘A Night at Sardi’s’ for 23 years along with his wife, Laurie.   Peter Grad will be honored posthumously with the first (ever) Peter Grad Philanthropy Award.  gthe namesake award will carry on his passion for the cause and his quest to help end Alzheimer’s.

Also receiving an award is Keith Carradine, who advocates on behalf of those impacted by the disease.  He will be honored with the Caregiver of the Year Award.

A Night at Sardi’s” is an annual celebrity musical revue and awards dinner to benefit the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 800 prominent entertainment industry leaders and celebrities gather to recognize advances in the fight against Alzheimer’s — and rally around the growing movement to end the disease.   To date, the event has raised more than $27 Mil aiding in research and how to address the rapidly growing health crisis.

Celebrities that are slated to perform include: Jason Alexander, Mayim Bialik, Dove Cameron, Keith Carradine, Kaley Cuoco, Karen David, Kerris Dorsey, Ben Feldman, Johnny Galecki, Peter Gallagher, Simon Helberg, Derek Hough, Eric McCormack, Jack McGee, Joey McIntyre, Kunal Nayyar, Timothy Omundson, Janel Parrish, Jim Parsons, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Pietz, Grace Potter, Sarah Rafferty, Melissa Rauch, Tyler Ritter, Seth Rogen, Traci Thoms, Lea Thompson, and Steven Weber.

Tonight the show will include Kaley Cuoco singing ‘Dance 10 Looks 3’ from the Chorus Line; the cast of The Big Bang Theory singing “You’re the One That I Want/We Go Together” from Grease, Tracie Thomas will sing Maybe This Time from Cabaret, Erick McCormack & Steven Weber will sing Agony from Into the Woods, Jason Alexander will sing ‘You’ll Be Back’ From Hamilton, Peter Gallagher will sing ‘Luck Be a Lady’ from Guys and Dolls, Kerris Dorsey will sing “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ from Beautiful, Amy Pietz, Jack McGee and Tyler Ritter will single ‘Loverly/ALittleBit of Luck’ from My Fair Lady, Janel Parrish ‘For Good’ From Wicked, Eric McCormack will sing “I Got Life’ from Hair, Karen David & Timothy Omundson will sing ‘I’ll Know’ from Guys and Dolls and Steve Weber will sing “Trouble” from The Music Man.

A great program and the worthy cause raised $1.4 Mil and counting tonight to help #ENDALZ!

The future fundraisers have been handed over to Seth and Lauren Rogen, who chair Hilarity for Charity annual events that raise funds for the association.

We are sad to see this tradition go away, but hope that future events will include many of the celebrities that help bring attention to such a worthy cause.

The Big Bang Theory star and doctorate holder in Neuroscience, Mayim Bialik joined Fox TV today for the launch of FabLabTV, a new show that will focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.   Bialik will be actively participating in the program answering questions.

The press event took place at Archer School for Girls where they held live experiments during the press conference.  FabLabTV is hosted by Aysia Bell, Kerri Doherty, Cara Santa Maria,  Nick Uhas, and Madi Vorva.

Other participants came from various youth oriented shows who participated in some on-the-spot questions about STEM.

Below is Mayim’s talk at the FabLabTV Launch event, courtesy of Fox TV and FabLabTV.

Full Press Release:

MAYIM BIALIK AND TEEN CELEBRITY SUPPORTERS ANNOUNCE FABLAB, THE FIRST SCIENCE TELEVISION SERIES AIMED AT ‘TWEEN AND TEEN GIRLS, FROM THE PRODUCERS OF THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS FABLAB IS A NEW APPROACH TO ENGAGING ‘TWEEN AND TEEN GIRLS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM), BROADCAST NATIONALLY ON WEEKEND MORNINGS

Los Angeles (March 3, 2016) — FabLab is the first and only science television series aimed at bringing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to the under-reached ‘tween and teen girl demographic. The series airs nationally (check local listings) and is seen in over 80 million homes weekend mornings as part of Xploration Station’s Educational and Informational STEM block of programming. Five hosts bring STEM alive and help show the teen and ‘tween viewers that STEM solves problems, changes lives, and in short, makes the world better. The hosts are Kerri Doherty, popular on YouTube for her comedic approach to all things geeky; Cara Santa Maria, a hipster science broadcaster; newcomer Aysia Bell; Madi Vorva, a Teen Choice Pro-Social award winner; and the sole male host, Nick Uhas, a former Big Brother contestant and a YouTube science guru. Celebrity co-hosts and guests will populate the series, each week taped in a new locale to augment that week’s topic.

Several announcements were made from a press conference at The Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles today. There are exciting interactive elements on the TV show and surrounding FabLab digital channels including:

• Mayim Bialik’s “Ask Mayim” weekly Q&A segment allows kids across the country to send in any questions about science or technology and get answers from the biggest name in science entertainment, seamlessly combining humor and information.

• The debut of FabLab News on the FabLab YouTube Channel where it is shown how Science, Tech and Innovation are helping to solve the biggest issues of the day.

• FabLab is encouraging kids across the country to vote online for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, seeking the coolest science project to help to make their communities better places. “Young students today are really thinking about how they can make the world a better place, and the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest can help guide them,” said Andrew Bowins, vice president of Corporate Reputation at Samsung Electronics America. “The contest challenges students to use their STEM skills to solve a problem in their community. We believe it encourages them to grow as students as well as neighbors, and we are excited to partner with FabLab. The program shows kids that there are even more opportunities to use STEM in the real world.”

• Lenovo FabFinder national science talent search launches today to find guest reporters and hosts to appear on FabLab; students should go to www.fablabtv.com to learn how to submit videos to enter. “This talent search gives young women a chance to showcase their interest in STEM and to connect with the next generation of STEM leaders. Lenovo is proud to support a search to identify and tap into more diverse STEM talent,” said Yolanda Conyers, vice president of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer for Lenovo.

Mayim (The Big Bang Theory) said, “As a neuroscientist who was encouraged to enter the field in high school, getting girls involved in science (or STEM ) is a personal passion of mine. Through my interactive ‘Ask Mayim’ segment, I hope to get more young women excited about getting into the field that I love so much.”

Some influential believers who have offered to lend their support through their enormous social media networks include Leonardo DiCaprio, Amandla Steinberg, and Karlie Kloss. The teen stars who showed their enthusiasm at the press conference are Katherine McNamara (The Shadow Hunters), Brec Bassinger (Bella and the Bulldogs), Kelli Berglund (Lab Rats), Paris Berelc (Lab Rats), Chloe Lukasiak (Teen Choice Awards winner), Chantel Jeffries (Club Noir), and Roshon Fegan (Disney Channel). Little-known fact about some of your favorite stars –they have a background in or passion for science. That impressive list includes Seth McFarlane, Danica McKellar, Natalie Portman, Alan Alda, Lisa Kudrow, Ashton Kutcher, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Daryl Hannah and Eva Longoria, to name a few.

FabLab has one mission: to get girls enthused about STEM by drawing the connections between STEM innovations and making the world a better place. Why? Studies have shown that illustrating how STEM inventions and breakthroughs have the power to change the world for the better, really motivating young women to engage with the sciences. FabLab is produced in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The show also partners with 15 additional organizations inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

“We are thrilled to partner with FabLab for the launch of the show,” said Elizabeth English, Head of School at The Archer School for Girls. “We know that STEM is the fastest-growing professional sector with the highest paying jobs. We also know that these fields hold the key to solving some of our world’s most pressing problems, and as such demand a plurality of perspectives. Archer is proud to stand at the forefront of advancing girls in STEM and to be working toward a future where women are not only contributors to STEM solutions but leaders in the field.”

It is a myth that girls don’t gravitate to STEM. Statistics support the fact that 74% of girls show at least as much interest as boys in the sciences. High school girls, in particular, surpass the percentage of boys interested in Algebra II and Calculus, for example. But along the way, young women tend to be drawn to fields that have social impact and make a difference. FabLab is highlighting amazing STEM discoveries that are mind-blowing and world-changing to help reframe STEM and allow young women to see those fields as a creative outlet for improving their world. FabLab isn’t just reaching the audience on the television show; it will have an active and innovative online and digital presence with exclusive programming for its own YouTube channel and interactivity through social media, all driving home the same message of STEM making the world better for people, pets and the planet.

Corporate partners who share the vision and have jumped on board to assist in attracting girls to science, technology and innovation include Samsung Electronics America, Lenovo, Motorola Mobility Foundation, Ally Bank, Brocade and L’Oréal USA. “Inspiring the next generation of girls in

STEM is a key component of the L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program,” said Lauren Paige, L’Oréal USA’s Vice President of Public Affairs & Strategic Initiatives. “We are proud to partner with FabLab and look forward to featuring the exciting work of our For Women in Science fellows to help encourage girls to explore scientific careers.”

The duo-writing team of Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch who will be premiering their film, The Bronze, in West Hollywood on March 7 and opening domestically on March 18 are now finding another project in the works that has been picked up by CBS and Warner Bros. Television.

The Big Bang Theory star and her husband, are co-writing a new multi-camera comedy, If We’re Not Married by 30, about a guy who comes to collect on a pre-teen promise made by his childhood best friend — whom he hasn’t seen in more than a decade.  CBS ordered a script commitment, which will be produced with Warner Bros. Television.

The Bronze, created, written and executive produced with the Duplass brothers (Mark and Jay Duplass) will be opening in theaters around the nation March 18 stars The Big Bang Theory actress who plays a foul-mouthed former gymnastics bronze medalist who must fight for her local celebrity status when a young athlete’s star rises in town.

See Melissa’s Interview on WGN about The Bronze

The Rauch’s won outstanding solo show at the New York International Fringe Festival with their 2005 comedy stage show The Miss Education of Jenna Bush.   The comedy also had an extended run via HBO US Comedy Arts Festival and at the Coronet Theater.

Rauch isn’t the only Big Bang star to have projects being developed for CBS.  Fellow cast-mate Kevin Sussman, who plays Stuart Bloom on the comedy hit, teaming with CBS for Sony Pictures Television’s multi-camera comedy Wife of Crime, about a straight-laced guy from Staten Island who marries into an Italian family with ties to the mob and finds himself drawn to the warmth of his new crime family.  Jim Parsons is another cast mate that has a project that has a script order out on it from CBS.  Parsons, through his shingle That’s Wonderful Productions at Warner Bros.,  Untitled Alyssa Shelasky Project centers on an optimistic and independent woman nearing 40 with an eccentric and supportive family (all of whom live in her building), based on Alyssa Shelasky’s book .

Question: Do you have any Once Upon a Time spoilers? —Jackie
Ausiello: I have not just “any” spoilers, but a bit of a sneak peek at Season 6! For the final two episodes of the about-to-premiere Season 5B, the ABC series is looking to cast the recurring roles of two brothers — one who is physically imposing, brutish, morally corrupt and willing to destroy his family in the pursuit of power, and the other who is weaker and desperate to escape his older bro’s sinister shadow. Should Once get picked up for the fall, these two newcomers would spill over into next season, as well. Cain and Abel? An anthropomorphized Scar and Mufasa? Share your theories in the Comments!

….

Question: I am dying for some scoop on Deacon and Rayna’s wedding! Since we’ve already been spoiled that it’s happening when Nashville FINALLY returns on 3/16, can you give us any details? — JC
Ausiello:
You mean in addition to this list of spoilerish goods, JC? Wow. You really are insatiable. How about this: The last scene of the episode sets up an intriguing arc I definitely did not see coming.

Question: Got any scoop on Blindspot? —Michelle
Ausiello: As you might suspect, John Hodgman’s appearance as Chief Inspector Jonas Fischer in Monday’s episode wasn’t a one-and-done deal. Although series creator Martin Gero assures us that Agent Patterson is “professionally secure” for the time being, Fischer will be back very soon — in Episode 13, to be exact — with his eye on unseating Assistant Director Mayfair. “He’s not done with Mayfair yet,” Gero teases. “Mayfair and her past are something that we’re taking a look at all season. They all have so many secrets, and Jonas is just looking for any sort of wedge to get in there.”

Question: Will Robert Wagner return for Tony’s last episodes of NCIS? –Christopoher
Ausiello: Well, DiNozzo Sr. is for certain returning during Michael Weatherly’s farewell run, appearing in Episode 19 (which is tentatively set to air March 22).

Question: Can I have some The Big Bang Theory scoop, please? —Aleksandra
Ausiello: Sheldon and Amy’s sex life has cooled off considerably since they’reinaugural love-making session in December. “Sheldon made it pretty clear that this would be an annual event on her birthday,” explains showrunner Steve Molaro. “I don’t know what the future holds, but so far, he’s been sticking to that.” BONUS SCOOP: Howard and Bernadette’s baby-making mojo will not rub off on Leonard and Penny, confirms Molaro, who says the newlyweds are in “no rush” to start a family. Coincidentally, Molaro is in no rush for them to start a family either. “Realistically, if Penny and Leonard had a baby,” he says, “that baby would start to alter the DNA of the show a lot more dramatically than Howard and Bernadette’s.”

Melissa Rauch Image:

Melissa Rauch has a candid way of speaking about her uphill acting journey that makes listeners feel they were there for it.

She recounts the time she tried to be a hand model for TGI Fridays while waitressing in the dead of winter. (“They said, ‘We just need a close-up of your hands serving the fajitas,’ or whatever, and no joke, I heard the director go, ‘Jesus Christ!’ They were just so raw and beat up. I didn’t get the job.”) Then there were all the times she stood in the cold, handing out fliers to promote her standup sets to “perform sometimes for four people in the middle of Times Square.” Or when she gave away free tickets to her one-woman show, “The Miss Education of Jenna Bush,” to patrons in a Los Angeles Trader Joe’s, and the entire first row didn’t speak English. It runs like a laundry list of working actor problems: audition, perform, finish a gig, struggle, audition, struggle, rinse, repeat.

Theater work doesn’t typically lead to the end of the relentless cycle, but according to Rauch, it was the New York International Fringe Festival that did it for her. “The Miss Education of Jenna Bush,” which she and her husband, Winston Rauch, wrote to poke fun at George W. Bush’s youngest daughter, landed her an agent and sparked the realization that writing her own material was the surest step forward for her career.

Less sure but necessary was the choice to do what many actors do when pursuing bigger opportunities: pick up and move to L.A. “We did a showcase of [‘Miss Education’], and not a lot of people showed up because not a lot of people see theater in L.A.—so that was another lesson.”

While she continued to do standup and appeared on “True Blood” and the short-lived “Kath & Kim,” she more often landed guest-star roles on shows that never aired, or if they made it to pilot, they tanked with no series order.

It took several years on the West Coast—writing short films like “The Condom Killer” and Funny Or Die skit songs like “Partially Stalked Love” between gigs—before she landed the guest-star-turned-series-regular spot as the opinionated microbiologist with a Napoleon complex, Bernadette Rostenkowski, on “The Big Bang Theory.” (She auditioned for the award-winning show with a Canadian accent that to this day she can’t explain the origin of.)

“I was so grateful when ‘Big Bang’ happened,” she says. “It was supposed to be a one-time guest star!

“[After being cast] I’d gotten smaller roles in movies, but I do feel Hollywood loves to—and I think this is true in any career when people know what’s proven—that’s what they want to hire you for. I said, I can wait for the perfect role to come along, but I decided I didn’t want to wait on Hollywood anymore.”

Enter “The Bronze” and Hope Annabelle Greggory, a foul-mouthed gymnast in the final stages of a has-been’s dying career—she even has the “Dancing With the Stars” poster to prove it.

Co-written by the Rauches, the movie’s lead character is a beacon of self-absorption. We meet her as she’s midmasturbation to a decade-old tape of her bronze medal Olympic win, and demanding her father (Gary Cole) cut the crust off her grilled cheese sandwich. He’s resorted to reading books titled “Saying NO: The Key to Raising a Responsible Adult.”

When she’s not being verbally abusive or romanticizing the third-place achievement that ultimately ended her gymnastics career with an ankle injury, she’s stealing kids’ birthday card money out of her dad’s mail truck and cruising the local mall and diner for free milkshakes and Sbarro pizza. Endorsement deals have been replaced with pumping her Amherst, Ohio, celebrity status—where the film was shot—for all it’s worth.

But we see the extent of her depravity when her estranged Olympic trainer, the vodka-guzzling Coach P. (Christine E. Abraham), gives her a $500,000 ticket out. The Russian’s suicide note lists a single stipulation to claim the sum: coach the up-and-coming Maggie Townsend (Haley Lu Richardson) to competition. Balking at the thought of having what remains of her prestige overshadowed, Hope sets out to sabotage the impressionable Maggie’s career with fast food, boys, and drugs. Maggie’s only true champions are gym manager Ben (Thomas Middleditch) and Hope’s archnemesis, gold medalist Lance Tucker (Sebastian Stan)—who also happens to be the person who took her virginity.

If you’re wondering why this is Rauch’s perfect character, keep in mind Hope was half-created by a comedian who did Whoopi Goldberg’s standup about her crotch at age 7 and begged her parents to put her in small New Jersey beauty pageants simply for the talent portion—because who wants their comedy relegated to elementary school show-and-tells?

Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Jim Parsons, Melissa Rauch and Simon Helberg celebrate 200 episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ with Conan O’Brien on CONAN Feb 24, 2016. Image: C.Symonds

As reported, The Big Bang Theory has been celebrating making 200 episodes of the ever, still popular sitcom and tonight was no exception. The Big Bang Theory which premiered September 24, 2016 will be airing it’s 200th episode on Thursday, Feb 25, 2016.   The cast and producers have been recalling the history and timeline of the show and telling cute anecdotes in the media (see above link for links to various sources).

Tonight, the cast of The Big Bang Theory  joined Conan O’Brien and continued sharing many stories including Mayim Bialik and Johnny Galecki sharing a first kiss when Mayim starred in Blossom.

Helberg did a great imitation of Nayyar.  He also shared with the audience his warm-up routine of stretching in a deep lunge in his underwear (ok, he didn’t re-enact in his undies, but did re-enact the lunge) where he screams/chants to loosen up and to get his emotions to a level he desires for taping.

Parsons said he actually purchased a Physics 101 book that he and Johnny began to try and study and he could not get past the first chapter.   They all admitted they had not learned anything regarding physics from the show, but then pointed out Bialik likely understood it and got some from it.

Cuoco is envied because she never has to study lines.  She shows up and nails her lines without any study.   She sleeps while others are pacing away trying to learn their lines.   She said it was easy for  her because it just comes to her quickly.  She knows the character well enough to know what she would likely say.

Kunal has quite the reputation of being wrong about everything.  He said just “say anything with confidence and people will believe you.”

Conan also had puppy The Big Bang Theory on his show tonight, where puppies dressed as the cast members were introduced and played around on a set to scale of the series.

We bring you clips (including captures)  from the show all courtesy of Teamcoco and tbs.   Stay tuned, more coming….

As previously reported, Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant co-star in Florence Foster Jenkins as does The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg.

Florence Foster Jenkins is a biopic about a titular character (Streep) who is wealthy and was dubbed the “worst vocalist of all time.”   The film takes place in the mid to late 1800’s.   Jenkins had grand illusions of becoming an opera singer, but had no vocal skills or talent.   But she fell in love with St. Clair Bayfield,  who is a Shakspearean actor played by Hugh Grant.  Bayfield takes on Jenkins as his client by becoming her agent and she becomes his “common-law” wife.

Meryl Streep has performed various roles which require vocal talent and has a beautiful voice.  Taking on the role of Jenkins created a challenge for her, she basically had to learn how to suck at singing to do the role.   As always, the veteran actress delivers and we trust that her voice will again return to beautiful outside of this film project.

Florence Foster Jenkins hails from Paramount Pictures and will be released in the the following European countries on the following dates:

  • United Kingdom   Apr 23, 2016(Belfast Film Festival)
  • United Kingdom   May 6, 2016
  • Croatia   Jun 2, 2016
  • Bulgaria   Jun 3, 2016
  • Portugal   Jun 24, 2016
  • Estonia   Jul 8, 2016
  • Netherlands   Aug 31, 2016
  • Germany   Nov 24, 2016

If it moves to the USA market, we will let you know the date as soon as one has been set.

Meslissa Rauch & Simon Helberg in ‘The Big Bang Theory’ – The Valentino Submergence episode 9.15. Image: WBEI/CBS

Caution: Major spoilers ahead!

CBS has been teasing constantly that this episode would reveal the biggest Big Bang Theory secret ever—and now we finally know! But was it the biggest secret in the show’s history? To be honest, not exactly. It was a pretty profound reveal, but it wasn’t quite as earth shattering as learning that Amy and Sheldon would have coitus or that Leonard and Penny would tie the knot. Still, the news that (drumroll, please) Bernadette is pregnant is a majorly exciting development, and one that will change the show as it heads into its 10th season.

Of course, Howard doesn’t know that Bernadette is pregnant because a rabbit on the loose conveniently stopped that from happening. Still, it’s a secret we didn’t see coming (click here to see what we thought the secret was!) since executive producer Steve Molaro told us a mere two months ago that there were “no immediate plans [for a baby].” So what changed? After all, Molaro said that while you “never know” what could happen, “that is the kind of thing that can really affect the DNA of a show.” Molaro wasn’t trying to lead us or anyone on with those quotes. At that time (in early December), he hadn’t even strongly thought about the possibility of a Big Bang baby this soon. When we caught up with Molaro after the taping of Big Bang‘s 200th episode on Tuesday night, he told Glamour that he came up with the idea two days before the table read of “The Valentino Submergence” (which most likely took place in early January). Per our conversation this past Tuesday night, he casually mentioned the idea of a Wolowitz/Rostenkowski baby to his fellow producers and writers—and surprisingly (for Molaro), it was met with much fanfare.

Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) was shocked by the decision, but she was totally thrilled to play all of the upcoming story lines that being pregnant and having a baby will bring. The actress—who in real life is not expecting—hasn’t been fitted for a fake baby bump yet, but she knows that wardrobe change is coming and is looking forward to the whole process.

Exciting baby announcement aside though, the true heart of “The Valentino Submergence” belonged to Sheldon and Amy, who shared one of the most heartfelt moments as a couple in this episode. During Fun With Flags, Sheldon got uncharacteristically serious as he talked to Raj (nursing a broken heart after splitting with Emily) about his own difficulties with love. “I acknowledge how painful [break-ups] can be,” he told his friend. “However, pain has an evolutionary purpose…Raj, I’m sorry you’re suffering. When Amy and I broke up, I also suffered. This may sound surprising, but I’m grateful for having gone through it.” A surprised Amy (as well as the audience), couldn’t believe that Sheldon Cooper was being so raw and mature. “Really?” asked a puzzled Amy. “Yes,” responded Sheldon. “I believe our relationship now is stronger than ever…When we were apart, I learned how important you are to me. I realize that when two people are in love, sometimes they…”

‘Big Bang Theory’ Boss on Bernadette’s Big Bombshell

by Lesley Goldberg/Hollywood Reporter

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from “The Valentino Submergence” episode of The Big Bang Theory.]CBS’ The Big Bang Theory had one epic special delivery for fans during Thursday’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode: Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) is pregnant. The news, revealed in her final scene of the episode, comes as quite a bombshell to diehard viewers of the geek-tastic comedy series from Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Steve Molaro as Bernadette, initially, never wanted children.During the episode, Howard and Bernadette opt to spend Valentine’s Day together at home in their new hot tub — but find a rabbit fighting for its life in the water. The couple works together to revive the bunny — which they fittingly name Valentino. For now, Bernadette has yet to tell Howard as only Valentino is aware of her big baby news.Elsewhere, Raj breaks up with Emily and shifts his affection on Claire — who, just as luck would have it, recently got back together with her boyfriend. It sends Raj into a spiral and prompts a live online discussion about his (and Barry’s) love life during Sheldon and Amy’s broadcast of Fun With Flags.

As for Penny and Leonard, they realize they’re getting older and try to bring some spontaneity back to their marriage by surprising Sheldon and Amy with a costumed confetti parade.

To get the scoop on Bernadette’s pregnancy and what to expect from the remainder of season nine, The Hollywood Reporter turned to showrunner Molaro.

When did you come up with Bernadette’s pregnancy?

We’ve touched on the idea of Bernadette and Howard and children here and there but we didn’t really have plans to pull the trigger at any point. It wasn’t even part of the outline for the episode. We were writing it and getting toward the end of the story and I guess maternity was in the air because Bernadette was holding this wrapped up bunny and they named it and we were writing the final page of that storyline. Half-kidding, I said, “What if Bernadette tells the rabbit, ‘We’ll find another time to tell him I’m pregnant.’ ” The room had such a strong, positive reaction to it. We thought it seemed like an organic moment and we decided to put it in. Because there was no plan for it, it felt very exciting to us when we did it; like it was a thing that should happen and maybe this was the time to do it. I handed [co-creator] Chuck Lorre the draft of the script and didn’t tell him it was in there. He got to the end and thought, “Wow, OK sure, that totally makes sense. Let’s do it.”

Why is now the right time for it?

Part of what makes the time right is that it maybe doesn’t feel completely right — and that’s what we ‘re attracted to. There were a lot of questions not that long ago when Sheldon and Amy were consummating their relationship and we’d get asked, “Why now?” Part of me feels that the fact that you’re surprised enough to ask me, “Why now,” is a good reason that now is a good time. Having a baby in real life and on a show, it seems like there’s never going to be a really clear and appropriate time. If it seemed like the obvious time, it wouldn’t be exciting for us to do it. Babies take a long time to come. This baby wouldn’t be due until halfway through season 10 of the show. We’re in the middle of our ninth year, why not now?!

Big Bang Theory Recap: Howard and Bernadette Are [Spoiler]!

by Ryan Schwartz/TVLine

It’s official (and somewhat unexpected): Howard and Bernadette are having a baby — even if Howard doesn’t know it yet.

Thursday’s Valentine’s Day episode of The Big Bang Theory revealed that the longtime couple will soon be first-time parents. Meanwhile, Sheldon’s live edition (!) of Fun With Flags turned into his own personal nightmare, Leonard and Penny’s night on the town took an unexpected route and Raj broke up with Emily to explore a (non-existent) future with Claire.

In “The Valentino Submergence,” Howard and Bernadette purchase a romantic hot tub for two. Unfortunately, their plans to take a dip (or in Howard’s case, a skinny dip) in the jacuzzi are disrupted when Howard discovers what he believes to be a large rodent flopping around in the water.

Soon enough, the creature’s revealed to be a rabbit, which the couple attempt to nurse back to health before it ultimately bites Howard’s finger, provoking an immediate sense of panic in the birthday-suited man-child and a decision to visit the ER. As Howard exits, Bernadette mutters to herself that it might not be the best time to tell her husband that she’s pregnant. (No offense, Bernie, but you don’t need to be a microbiologist to know that!)

Raj and Claire might have had a vibe last week, but there’s no denying it meant more to him than it did to her. In fact, it meant so much to Raj that he goes as far as breaking up with Emily to explore a future with the aspiring screenwriter. Little does he know that Claire just got back together with her boyfriend, and she’s not about to give that up for someone she just met. A later attempt to get Emily back proves unsuccessful on his part — and rightfully so.

The Big Bang Theory shocker: Bernadette’s big news!

by:  Natalie Abrams/Entertainment Weekly

he Big Bang Theory has a baby on the way for Bernadette!

During the Valentine’s Day-themed episode, Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Howard (Simon Helberg) discover a young rabbit in their spa, whom they’re able to bring back to life. But after Howard gets bitten, their night is cut short so he can go to the emergency room to check for rabies. “We’ll find another time to tell him I’m pregnant,” Bernadette says to the rabbit.

The move to having children seems like a natural progression for The Big Bang Theory’s first couple to be married, especially since the comedy is in its ninth season — for what its worth, another long-running comedy Friends saw Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) get pregnant in its eighth season.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ Valentine’s Day Episode Drops a Big Bombshell (SPOILERS)

by Debra Birnbaum/Variety

It’s Valentine’s Day, and the gang is ready to ring in the holiday in style — but their celebrations don’t go exactly according to plan.

Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) have a romantic dinner planned at a restaurant, but the maitre d informs them they have to wait an hour for their table. He resists their attempts at bribery and flirtation, even calling her — gasp — “ma’am.” They’re desperate to prove they’re still young and fun.

Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Howard (Simon Helberg) hope to break in their new hot tub, but discover what they think is a rat flopping around. It turns out to be a rabbit, which they start trying to care for.

Raj (Kunal Nayyar) decides to break up with Emily so he can ask out his new bookstore crush Claire — who just got back together with her boyfriend.

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) stage a live edition of “Fun with Flags” — but their show gets interrupted by a heartbroken Raj (“What’s wrong with me? Why am I so self-destructive?”), not to mention Kripke.

There’s lots to love about The Big Bang Theory on Valentine’s Day

By Kyle Fowle/AVClub

Holiday-themed episodes tend to have a way of forcing TV shows to really focus on creating a connective thread between the episode’s various plots. Sometimes the holiday theme is a way to bring a bunch of characters together for one big chaotic bit of comedy. Sometimes it allows certain pairings to separate and yet remain thematically connected across the half-hour. Tonight’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode of The Big Bang Theory falls into that latter category, with the day of love and companionship (or loneliness and gross capitalism, depending on where you stand) promoting an episode structure that sees each subplot nicely tied together.

Considering that the show has struggled to find a way forward for all the characters after intensely focusing on Amy and Sheldon’s relationship for the first half of the season, the cohesive nature of this episode is more than welcome. It starts with the group of guys sitting in the cafeteria, Sheldon inviting all of them to join him and Amy for a special Valentine’s Day live stream of ‘Fun With Flags.’ Howard declines because he’s breaking in a new hot tub with Bernadette (Sheldon has no idea what he means), Leonard declines because he has dinner plans with Penny and also declines any future invitations, and Raj declines because he’s hanging out with Emily, or so he says in the saddest voice possible. Thus begins a discussion about whether Raj should finally break up with Emily, something he’s been thinking about for quite some time. For too long the show has ignored their relationship, so it’s nice to see their issues getting some screen time.

Eventually, Raj decides he’s going to do it; he’s going to break up with Emily and call Claire, the woman he met at the comic book store, and ask her on a date. Or at least that’s what the weird flash-forward thing suggests he’s thinking about. Inevitably, it leads to Raj thinking that he’s going to be alone for the rest of his life, that he can’t help but sabotage every relationship he enters into. That emotional setup sets the stage for Raj’s storyline intersecting with Amy and Sheldon’s, as he calls into ‘Fun With Flags’ and begins venting about his relationship troubles. On their own, the vignettes aren’t so interesting; the show has been down this road with Raj before, so seeing his insecurity pushed to the forefront just isn’t very fresh or interesting. However, the way “The Valentino Submergence” structures these segments makes for good comedy. Every time the camera cuts back to ‘Fun With Flags,” Sheldon is seen to be more and more distraught by the fact that his show has been derailed. The final cut sees him with his head buried in his arms in complete defeat, and it’s a hilarious bit of comedic timing. The coda that ends the segment also keeps things nicely balanced between sharp and charming; ‘Fun With Flags,’ somewhat amazingly, is always reliable.
