It is with sad news that we report that actress and director Elizabeth Peña, who played Gloria’s (played by Sofia Vergara) Columbia mother Pilar on Modern Family, has passed away. Peña died at age 55 following a short illness. She will be greatly missed.
The beautiful, Cuban-American Peña was an understated actress who is best known for her roles in The Incredibles, Rush Hour, La Bamba, Jacob’s Ladder and Lone Star.
The news of her death was confirmed by her manager, Gina Rugolo.
“News of Elizabeth Peña’s death hits particularly hard, for some reason, maybe because she was consistently outstanding in everything,” tweeted Matt Zoller Seitz, editor-in-chief of RogerEbert.com.
Pena was the fourth Latina actress to join the Director’s Guild of America.
R.I.P Elizabeth Peña. You will be greatly missed.
