The new original series “Expedition Unknown,” premiering on Thursday, January 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT with a special two-hour episode, features explorer and adventurer Josh Gates. From lost cities to buried treasure and stolen art, the world abounds with fascinating, iconic legends. In “Expedition Unknown” Gates sets out on a global journey in pursuit of answers to some of the world’s most puzzling stories. Armed with a degree in archaeology, a quick wit and a hunger for adventure, Gates investigates the latest developments in each unsolved legend before embarking on a fully immersive exploration. To separate fact from fiction, Gates inserts himself in different cultures to understand the world as they do.
Whether he’s trekking through Fiji in search of Amelia Earhart’s remains, diving the deep seas of Panama to locate Captain Morgan’s pirate ship or searching for Russia’s missing Amber Room stolen during WWII, Gates’ authentic roughshod adventures lead him one step closer to finding the truth.

The story of Amelia Earhart’s missing plane is perhaps one of the world’s most famous unsolved legends. Josh Gates travels to Papua New Guinea, where a local tribe believes they’ve found Earhart’s wrecked plane. Then, he heads to Fiji to investigate evidence that Earhart was stranded on a nearby island. But first he has to track down her missing bones!

The new original Travel Channel series “Expedition Unknown,” premiering in January 2015, chronicles Gates’ adventures as he explores unsolved iconic legends across the globe, such as the disappearance of Amelia Earhart in the South Pacific, the location of Captain Morgan’s treasure in Panama and the city of gold – El Dorado – in Peru.
An avid scuba diver and photographer, Gates has participated in sub-sea archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean, and his wanderlust has taken him from sweltering African deserts to the icy shores of Antarctica. In addition, he has scaled “the roof of Africa” on Mt. Kilimanjaro and climbed Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Americas.
Gates holds degrees from Tufts University in Archaeology and Drama and was recently inducted into The Explorers Club – a prestigious organization dedicated to the advancement of exploration and field research.
Gates previously served as host and co-executive producer of the Syfy Channel series “Destination Truth” as well as host of Syfy’s “Ghost Hunters Live.” He has appeared on The Today Show, CNN and a variety of other national television and radio programs. Gates’ travels are chronicled in his bestselling book, Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter (Simon & Schuster, 2011).
Gates currently resides in Los Angeles and on airport floors around the world.
