Edddie Redmayne who won the Oscar last year for his performance in The Theory of Everything may have another chance at a second win in his new role in Focus Features’ The Danish Girl where Redmayne plays opposite Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) in the screenplay adapation of the book  by David Ebershoff.

Lucinda Coxon adapted the book into the screenplay, directed by Tom Hooper and produced by Hooper, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Ann Harrrison, Ben Howarth, Ulf Israel, Gail Mutrux, Linda Reisman, Jane Robertson and Tore Schmidt.

Redmayne plays artist Lili Elbe, born Einar Wegener, and Vokander plays Elbe’s wife, Gerda who is also an artist.   Gerda works on a portrait with Einar posing in a dress, which changes their story dramatically  Through the remarkable and dangerous transition from Einar to Lili, the love between the couple grows while Lili’s journey takes them into uncharged territory.

Other cast include Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heart and Matthias Schoenaerts.

The Danish Girl will premiere at the Venice Film Festival and is slated to be at the Toronto International Film Festival.   Focus Features plans a New York and Los Angeles release on November 27 with additional cities to air the film in December.
