Craig Johnson, Creator and Director of The Skeleton Twins, is currently developing a new teen comedy project called Alex Strangelove with STX Entertainment.

Alex Strangelove, the script written by Johnson, is about a high school senior Alex Strangelove who is determined to lose his virginity.  He finds that his patient girlfriend is more than eager about his quest, and he is being cheered on by his rowdy friends.  The quest leads Alex into an exploration of modern manhood.

Currently STX Entertainment and Johnson are in advanced talks with Red Hour Films to produce the project.   Red Hour Films is Ben Stiller’s shingle, which has a longstanding first-look deal at Fox.   Red Hour has produced mainly comedies including Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Blades of Glory, Tropic Thunder and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Red Hour also announced in November 2015 that it ws partnering with Bold Films to produce a slate of new movies, TV and digital projects.  It has also announced that Weinstock was joining Red Hour at that point.  Red Hour is operated by Still and Stuart Cornfeld.

STX Entertainment is also in talks with producers Nicky weinstock and Jared Goldman about Alex Strangelove project.

Johnson has a dramedy, Wilson, starring Woddy Harrelson, Laura Dern, Judy Greer and Cheryl Hines currently in post-production at Fox Searchlight.   His film, The Skeleton Twins, starring Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Luke Wilson, received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance Film Festival in 2014.

Alex Strangelove was first reported on The Tracking Board and Variety.

Comcast Corp. is in talks to buy DreamWorks Animation SKG, and the price being tossed around is more than $3Billion, according to a report from Wall Street Journal.

DreamWorks Animation currently has an estimated $2.3 Billion market value, so the price being discussed is quite an uplift.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation has had several attempts to sell the company in recent years, including previous talks with Hasbro and Viacom/Paramount.   None of those resulted in a sale.   Katzenberg then diversified with the purchase of Awesomeness TV and went through a restructuring of the company which resulted in more limited offering of releases, causing stocks to plummet in 2013, but then work their way back up after the successful releases of Home and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

DreamWorks Animation  brought us Shrek, the Kung Fu Panda,  Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon franchises.  Their most recent releases included Trolls and  DinoTrux.

The Philadelphia-based giant cable company, Comcast also owns Universal Pictures film studio and would likely merge DreamWorks Animation with Universal Pictures, which also has an animation business (Illumination Entertainment) that makes the Despicable Me films.

As previously reported, Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant co-star in Florence Foster Jenkins as does The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg.

Florence Foster Jenkins is a biopic about a titular character (Streep) who is wealthy and was dubbed the “worst vocalist of all time.”   The film takes place in the mid to late 1800’s.   Jenkins had grand illusions of becoming an opera singer, but had no vocal skills or talent.   But she fell in love with St. Clair Bayfield,  who is a Shakspearean actor played by Hugh Grant.  Bayfield takes on Jenkins as his client by becoming her agent and she becomes his “common-law” wife.

Meryl Streep has performed various roles which require vocal talent and has a beautiful voice.  Taking on the role of Jenkins created a challenge for her, she basically had to learn how to suck at singing to do the role.   As always, the veteran actress delivers and we trust that her voice will again return to beautiful outside of this film project.

Florence Foster Jenkins hails from Paramount Pictures and will be released in the the following European countries on the following dates:

  • United Kingdom   Apr 23, 2016(Belfast Film Festival)
  • United Kingdom   May 6, 2016
  • Croatia   Jun 2, 2016
  • Bulgaria   Jun 3, 2016
  • Portugal   Jun 24, 2016
  • Estonia   Jul 8, 2016
  • Netherlands   Aug 31, 2016
  • Germany   Nov 24, 2016

If it moves to the USA market, we will let you know the date as soon as one has been set.

The winner will be announced Feb. 14 at the 30th ASC Awards ceremony.

“Our members have spoken with a fabulous group of choices,” says ASC President Richard Crudo. “The quality of the work is astounding, and it’s great to see we’re once again at the forefront of giving recognition where it’s due.”

“Each of the nominated films represents a different genre and a masterfully distinct visual style,” notes ASC Awards Chairman Daryn Okada. “We look forward to celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of these nominees in February.”

This is Deakins’ 14th ASC nomination. He won for Skyfall, The Shawshank Redemption and The Man Who Wasn’t There, and was also nominated for Unbroken, Prisoners, True Grit, The Reader (shared with Chris Menges, ASC, BSC), Revolutionary Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old MenKundun, Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou?

This is Kaminski’s sixth ASC nomination, following Lincoln, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad and Schindler’s List.

Lachman has been nominated for ASC Awards twice previously, in the theatrical-release category for Far from Heaven and in the MOW/miniseries category for HBO’s Mildred Pierce.

Lubezki has won the ASC Award in this category four times, for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Gravity, The Tree of Life and Children of Men. He was also nominated for Sleepy Hollow.

This is Seale’s fifth ASC nomination. He won for The English Patient and received additional nominations forCold Mountain, The Perfect Storm and Rain Man.

ASC Also nominated Macbeth, shot by Adam Arkapaw; Son of Saul, shot by Mátyás Erdély, HSC; and Beasts of No Nation, shot by Cary Joji Fukunaga, for the Spotlight Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in cinematography in a feature that was exhibited at a film festival, internationally, or in limited theatrical release.

All three cinematographers are first-time ASC Award nominees. The winner will be announced Feb. 14 at the 30th ASC Awards in Los Angeles.

“Our panel had a wealth of material to choose from and worked very hard to determine the best in visual artistry and craftsmanship in this category,” said ASC President Richard Crudo. “We congratulate the nominees on their achievements.”

For the Spotlight Award, a category that was introduced two years ago, ASC members submit entries that are screened by a blue-ribbon panel that chooses the nominees. All ASC cinematographers may vote to select the winner. Previous recipients of the Spotlight Award were the Polish film Ida and the Finnish film Concrete Night.

Macbeth, directed by Justin Kurzel, premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and subsequently screened at several festivals around the world. It made its U.S. debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Son of Saul, directed by László Nemes, also premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. It premiered in the U.S. at the Telluride Film Festival and went on to win the Bronze Frog at the Camerimage International Film Festival.

Beasts of No Nation,  which Fukunaga also directed, premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival and made its U.S. debut at Telluride. It was the first original feature produced by Netflix, and it received a limited theatrical release and began streaming on Netflix on the same date.

“Each of these nominated films evokes intense emotions through its cinematography,” said Daryn Okada, ASC Awards Committee chairman. “Their commitment to the visual narrative of their stories and characters are an integral part of the cinematic experience.”

ASC will honor director/producer Ridley Scott for advancing the art and craft of filmmaking by bestowing him with its Board of Governors Award at the 30th ASC Awards in February.

Scott received Oscar and DGA Award nominations for directing Black Hawk Down, Gladiator and Thelma & Louise. His estimable body of work also includes The Duellists (winner of the Cannes Best First Film Award), the science-fiction classics Alien and Blade Runner, and the films Legend, Someone to Watch Over Me, Black Rain, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, White Squall, G.I. Jane, Hannibal, Kingdom of Heaven, Matchstick Menand Robin Hood. Most recently, he directed The Martian, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Counselor andPrometheus.

“Ridley Scott’s work has always demonstrated a sensitivity to the image that is unique and venerable,” said ASC President Richard Crudo. “This is a well-deserved honor for one of our great visual stylists, and I’m so very pleased that the ASC has chosen to honor him this year.”

In 1967, Scott and his brother, Tony, formed the commercial- and advertising-production company RSA, which is known for creating innovative and groundbreaking commercials for some of the world’s most recognized brands. (The company’s credits include Apple’s “1984” ad, which Ridley Scott directed.) The Scott brothers also formed the film- and television-production company Scott Free, which has produced such films as In Her Shoes, The A-Team, Cyrus, The Grey and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

On television, Scott executive produces the acclaimed CBS drama The Good Wife. He has also been an executive producer on the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, The Andromeda Strain and The Company; the hit telefilms Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy and Killing Jesus; and RKO 281, The Gathering Storm, Gettysburg andInto the Storm.

Additionally, he executive produces the Amazon Studios series The Man in the High Castle, which is nominated for an ASC Award this year in the category of MOW/Miniseries/Pilot.

Scott directed his first television pilot, The Vatican, in 2013. Written by Paul Attanasio, the show explores the relationships, rivalries and mysteries taking place within the Catholic Church. Scott will also executive produce the series.

In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Scott was awarded a knighthood from the Order of the British Empire in 2003.

Scott will be presented with the ASC Board of Governors Award at the 30th ASC Awards ceremony, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Feb. 14, 2016.

The 68th Annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards nominees were announced on Jan 8, 2016.   Carol, Bridge of Spies and The Martian led in multiple category nominations while the lead role categories followed expectations with Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl),  Brie Larson (Room), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) all on the list of nominees.

Nominations were announced by Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw at the Princess Ann Theatre in London.

BAFTA nominations have often been a good indicator of what may be seen at the Oscars.   In 2015, many of the major category winners at BAFTA awards were also seen at the Oscars, such as Redmayne, Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette all receiving trophies at both awards events.  All five best film nominees and 15 out of 20 BAFTA acting nominees received  Oscar nods last year.   BAFTA is still holding to its five nominee slots for best picture nominees, while the Oscars have expanded to ten.

Trophies will be handed out at the BAFTA awards ceremony which will be held on February 14 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom and Stephen Fry will be hosting the gala event.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) will announce the the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards nominees  on December 14 and we will bring you the full list of nominees, so bookmark this page as we will be updating this post with the full list of nominees as they are announced.

TJ Miller will be hosting the Awards ceremonies this year which will be held on January 17, 2016 at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica California and aired lived on A&E, Lifetime and LMN at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.   The program will be expanded to a three-hour event, following a live one-hour red carpet pre-show coverage.

For the first year since the awards, both film and television will be awarded at the same time and same ceremony.   In the past awards for film occurred in January whereas awards for Television occurred in May.   This year television entries must have episodes that have completed and aired between June 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.   For many shows that would mean submissions would come from the current season, or for summer shows, this past summer.

“We are thrilled to bring the two Critics’ Choice Awards shows into one super-show,” said President Joey Berlin during a breakfast reception at the W Hotel in Hollywood. “Bringing all these stars together in one room is going to create an incredible night of entertainment.”

Combining the two mediums will not in any way eliminate any categories, according to Berlin. “Members will make all the nominations and vote for all the winners in the same categories as we have in the past,” he explained. “And we’ll be presenting all the major film and television categories live on air in one glamorous and star-studded TV special.”

The combination of film and television have made some questions raise as to the comparison of the Critics’ Choice Awards to the Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards.   Berlin justified the combination with, “our voters are perhaps less star-struck and a bit savvier than our foreign peers. While the Globes have long been the party of the year, we believe the Critics’ Choice Awards are a little smarter, a little more in touch with American and Canadian tastes, and ultimately more useful to the viewers and ticket buyers.”

Here is a schedule of what is yet to come before the Awards ceremony on January 17:

December 14, 2015 – Critics’ Choice Awards nominees announced

January 13, 2016 – Final ballots go out to the BTJA/ members

January 14, 2016 – Deadline for returning final ballots

January 17 2016 – Live Red Carpet event and Awards Ceremony airing on A&E, Lifetime and LMN.

The BFCA is comprised of approximately 300 members and the BTJA approximately 100 members who will be eligible to vote.

Congratulations to all of the nominees!

BurningBohdi

Burning Bohdi, which premiered at the Austin Film Festival has just been bought by Monterey Media for distribution in the US and Canada.  The film stars The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco in a role very diverse from her comedic character Penny on the sitcom.

Written by Matthew McDuffie and produced by Marshall Bear, besides Cuoco, the film stars Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Cody Horn (Magic Mike), Virgina Masden (Justice League, Monk, Scoundrels, Hell on Wheels, Crazy Kind of Love), Landon Liboiron (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Hemlock Grove), and Andy Buckley (The Office, The Lying Game, Odd Mom Out, Scorpion).

See Article on Burning Bohdi at Austin Film Festival

Burning Bohdi is about a group of millennials who learn about the death of a former high school classmate and have to learn to deal with death of a friend.   The friends all return home after they see on Facebook that the most popular person in their group has died.  The reunion stirs up a lot of unresolved feelings of love, longing and regret, as well as forgiveness mortality and gratitude.

Monterey Media is looking at a March theatrical release timeframe.

Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures is bringing Blizzard’s wildly popular video game Warcraft to the big screen in June 10, 2016.   On Nov 6 the first official trailer was released (see below).

Warcraft is produced by Charles Roven via his Atlas Entertainment Banner and directed by Duncan Jones, starring Travis Fimmel, Dominic Cooper, Robert Kazinsky, Toby Kebbell, Ben Foster, Ruth Negga, Daniel Wu and Paula Patton.

‘Warcraft,’ which is a multi-player fantasy series game with multiple chapters is set in a peaceful world of Azeroth.   Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces fearsome invaders, Orc warriors who are colonizing with each other after fleeing their dying home.   Two worlds connect, as a portal opens, where one army faces extinction and the other destruction.   Two heroes from opposing sides will decide the fate of their family, people and home as they embark on a major conflict.

Warcraft portrays the origin story of the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs, with an emphasis upon both the Alliance’s and the Horde’s sides of their conflict. Featuring characters such as Durotan and Lothar, the film will take place in a variety of locations established in the video game series.
