JJ Abrams revealed today via Twitter the name of the new Star Wars Episode VII film – The Force Awakens, which is due out in theaters December 18, 2015. The story will take place following the events that were set 30 years ago in Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi released in 1983.
The filming has wrapped and was moved into post-production phase on November 3, 2014.
Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens stars the original Star Wars IV, V and VI cast members of Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill. Harrison Ford, and Peter Mayhew who revive their roles as Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbaca. Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels returned to play R2D2 and C3PO, respectively. It also stars Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong’o.
JJ Abrams wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas and JJ Abrams directed the film. Lucas Film, Bad Robot, and Walt Disney Pictures are producing the film with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributing the film. Industrial Light & Magic will provide special effects for the film.
