Relativity just closed a deal on The Bronze, the raunchy and potty-mouthed film about the fading career of an Olympic bronze-medalist co-written by Melissa & Winston Rauch, and starring Melissa Rauch and Sebastian Stan.
To put this deal in perspective, dramatic features typically will average around $1.7 Mil and a documentary around $400,000. Only a handful of movies will get deals topping $1 million; last year’s highest sales price was a relatively modest $3.5 million. The Bronze would be best classified as a dark comedy. The Rauch’s should be well pleased with their distribution deal.
This year the festival is expected to see transactions up to around $4.6 Billion for indie investments, giving filmmakers bout a 4 out of 5 chance of getting a deal. Prior to 2010, only about 10 percent of indies got deals, but with the incorporation of Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, iTunes and other video on demand services, more deals are being made that ever.
