On Wednesday, March 18th the Beverly Hilton will be the site of the annual celebrity musical review that raises funds for Alzheimer’s research, care and support. Each year the event honors those who have made a contribution to the cause in a way “that embodies the spirit of the event and has shown extraordinary commitment to the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association”.
The 2015 Abe Burrows Award recipient is the Sony Pictures Classics film ‘Still Alice’ based on the New York Times best selling novel by Lisa Genova. The story of Alice Howland, a psychology professor at Harvard and renowned linguistics expert, who becomes increasingly forgetful and bewildered in the course of her daily activities. As the episodes of disorientation become more frequent the life she built begins to spiral beyond her control.
The film adaptation has received numerous accolades including SAG, BAFTA and Golden Globes wins for Julianne Moore for her portrayal of Alice, a role which for which she is also a leading contender for the Oscar in the leading actress category. The film itself is raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and similar dementias which the association estimates Americans develop every 67 seconds.
Also slated as an award recipient is Joey McIntrye who will receive the Caregiver of the Year Award for promoting greater understanding of the effects the disease can have on individuals, families and caregivers. The singer/songwriter had blogged about his mother’s struggles with the disease and raised funds through his Crowd Rise campaign to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by running in the 2013 Boston Marathon an event in which he continues to participate.
