We will be covering The Big Bang Theory and Dreamworks Animations’ Home activities at Comic-Con.  Please check back as this will be updated throughout the event.

Dreamworks Animation

Today Dreamworks Animation is holding their panel.  The panel will be discussing Home (with the handsome Jim Parsons and Tim Johnson) and Penguin in Madagascar (with the handsome Benedict Cumberbatch on the panel).   Craig Ferguson is hosting the panel.

Jim Parsons

Jim Parsons, a clear fan favorite,  received huge cheers ushering him onto the Panel, hosted by Craig Ferguson, joined by Tim Johnson, the creator of the film Home.

Tim Johnson and Jim Parsons gave a brief overview of the film and Jim’s character “Oh” named after the less-than-enthusiastic response the Boov gets every time he encounters one of his fellow aliens because of his bumbling ways.

Both Jim and Tim continued to discuss how Rhianna was involved throughout the creative process in defining and creating her character “Tip” to bring life to the girl who would befriend “Oh” and try to save the planet earth from the Boov population that has taken over and decided to “improve” the world.  Unfortunately in the process it appears that both she and Oh destroy Paris.

“When you first see your voice with that character, it does take an adjustment period,” Parsons said. “I was a little horrified. The animators are the greatest excuse-makers for your performance in the world. I deliver my lines and I’m like, ‘I don’t like that performance at all. And then they draw it and I’m like, ‘That was perfect!’

The Big Bang Theory

The panel seating position from right to left is as follows:
Steve Molaro, Bill Prady Dave Goetsch, Jim Reynolds, Steve Holland, Maria Ferrari, Anthony Del Broccolo,Tara Hernandez, Jeremy Howe, and then David Salzberg

The event started with a highlights clip and when the boys were dressed in costume and buying Comic-Con tickets aired, the crowd cheered in a big way.

Highlights Clip

Kate Micucci and Riki Linkholme of Garfunkel & Oates, who are going to be featured at the House of Blues in San Diego,  were up next,  playing live the song Howard sang to Bernadette, “If I Didn’t Have You”  in the Ballroom at the panel today giving their own “spin” and adding words about Comic-Con in the piece.  Nice touch ladies!

Craig Ferguson moderated the panel.  Of course one of the questions asked was the status of the contracts that are pending.  This is probably the question everyone felt was the big elephant in the room, yet unfortunately it went unanswered as Craig responded “We can’t let you ask about that — it’s a legal question.”

When Professor Proton’s death came up, Craig replied “You bastard” to Steve Molaro, who was blamed for the death of the character.

Bob Newhart had to be given special tips on Star Wars in order to perform his role in the Professor Proton after-life scenes.

Eric Kaplan received some boos from the audience when he revealed that he was not a fan of Star Wars, yet Steve Holland is a big fan and threw a Star Wars themed party at his home.

A tidbit about The Big Bang Theory is that James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher met for the first time on their set.  Who would have known?  When Carrie first saw James, she said “Dad!”

Stephen Hawking holds a special place in his heart for the show and invited the writers to his birthday party!

Tara Hernandez is a big fan of both Craig Ferguson and How To Train Your Dragon it seems.

Bill Prady claims that the show was never originally intended to be about geeks and nerds, but it was about special people who were highly intelligent and people they knew.  He had considered originally to make them about computer programmers, where he had worked in a past career life.

Jeremy Howe talks about how he originally was a writer’s assistant, easing into becoming part of the writing staff.   Anthony Del Broccolo worked at Nickelodian, joining (along with Maria Ferrrari and Steve Holland)  The Big Bang Theory team in Season 3.

Eric Kaplan was interviewed when the producers were seeking a different Eric Kaplan and signals were crossed.   This Eric was contacted instead and well the rest is history!

Eric Kaplan thinks that the good thing about science fiction is it makes the real world comprehensible to people.  When commenting on himself and others like him:

We make sure we don’t exceed a certain level, but we don’t drop below either. -Eric Kaplan

Dave Goetsch at one time shared an idea early in the show and Chuck Lorre responded “if you do that you will ruin the show”.   So much for confidence building.

Molaro does talk to the cast about upcoming story and Johnny finds it particularly helpful.

Fan questions started with asking about the elevator.  “Will it ever be fixed?”
Molaro replied that it was the only exercise the boys get.   Prady feels the staircase gives the characters and “organic place” to walk and talk.

Trivia piece about the stairs, WB originally wanted to move the pilot to a different sound stage so that they would not have to dig another hole for the stairs.

When the show first brought on the girls Amy and Bernadette, the show had no specific or grand plan for them according to Molaro.  “We loved their auditions and they were great and that is how it happened.”

One of the fans talked about how she is very happy with the Shamy progress and the crowd reinforced her enthusiasm for the couple by a huge cheer.  When Molaro mentioned the Shamy kiss on the train, the crowd again cheered and clapped.

The kiss caused a lot of stress within the writing team because they wanted to get it right.   They wrote various versions, including a gentler version where Sheldon kissed Amy because he is enjoying the train.

When asked about whether or not Shamy will continue to progress, Prady  answered “Watching Amy move Sheldon is incredible. Sheldon doesn’t want to lose Amy but isn’t comfortable with her being happy on her terms right now so that moves him forward.”

Prady teases Eric Kaplan by stating “Uncomfortable and direct questions from Eric are part of the writer’s room experience.  ”

When asked about Sheldon’s progress, Prady says “Sheldon will not move at all and Amy will not let him move.”

Goetsch estimates that the writers spend 1500 hours a season together and the job does get tough.

The audience was shown a hilarious spoof of the Serial Ape-ist2 “Monkey See, Monkey Kill” which had the audience roaring with laughter and cheering.

Special Guest Wil Wheaton joined the panel!

Wil Wheaton immediately starts out with “I’m not as evil as the character started out being, but it gradually shifted to more of who I am in real life.”

Craig interjected that he wished the Serial Ape-ist2 movie was real.  Wil  replied that “the more we  talked about the scenes, the more they wanted it to be real.”

The Wil Wheaton home on the show is designed to look like Wil’s real home.  The Crusher wall art he actually owns in his real home.

A fan asked if there were more flashbacks planned and Molaro said that none were planned at this time.

Craig suggested a “Big Bang Babies (a la Muppet Babies)” show.  Molaro replied back that there are no plans for the characters to have babies.

One fan asked why there was so much hate on Aquaman.  Craig yelled back that Aquaman is not a real superhero.  Wheaton on the other hand likes Aquaman.

Sheldon is a hypochonriac.  If he says diagnosed, in all likelihood it was by himself.  You cannot take him for his word, according to Prady.

Good news, the comic book store is not a total goner.  Molaro says the show will not go on without a comic book store.

Kaplan says that Star Wars is a “childish wish fulfilment.”

There is no roadmap set out yet for the characters.  The women were attributed to the large growth the guys have made.

Leonard and Penny are not in a rush to get married.  Penny wants to set the date far enough out that people will know she is not pregnant.

Molaro has thoughts on how the show will end, but will not share them.

“Penny’s last name is a bit of a superstition right now” says Molaro when asked about whether her last name will be revealed.  When the Leonard and Penny characters marry, they will figure out how to work the last name issue.

Stuart is still with Mrs. Wolowitz at the start of the new season.

Mary Quigley selects the shirts that the guys wear on the show.
