Alan Cumming’s Florent project about New York restauranteur Florent Morellet, was picked up by Showtime for development. Florent is a half-hour dark comedy that will star Cumming in the title role, written by Mad Men’s Patricia Resnick and directed by Rosemary Rodriquez from The Good Wife.
But don’t worry The Good Wife fans, three-time Emmy nominee Cumming will still be very much continuing his role on the law-drama series. Should Florent be picked up to be a series, Cumming would segue to it after he is done with The Good Wife.
Florent, which originally was slated for the Sundance TV Channel, is a story of Florent Morellett who in the early 80s opened a French diner/restaurant in New York’s Meatpacking District. Florent explores the light and dark of that time, as well as the craziness of a place that become a destination for everyone from New York’s literati, to the neighborhood hookers and hustlers, to the NYPD, to the burgeoning LGBT community — all through the eyes of Florent, played by Alan Cumming with advice from the real restauranteur, himself).
Directed by David Sigal, who directed the 2010 documentary about the diner, Florent!, the new series will be co-produced by Sigal, along with his producing partner Michael Tive of Magic Lanter Pics. Cumming also serves as a producer with Resnick, Rodriguez, Jonathan Baruch of Story By Entertainment and Howard Bruanstein all executive producing.
